Sunday, October 26, 1986 DAILY SPORTS NEWS 73 Lions caged again By JOE O'DAY Daily News Sports Writer His surname is Gamble but Kenny Gamble is money in the bank. The hard-running junior halfback rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns yesterday as previously winless Colgate overwhelmed hapless Columbia, 54-8, at Wien Stadium before a gathering of 4,640. And when Gamble wasn't running the Lions ragged, the Red Raiders' sophomore quarterback, Damon Phelan, connected on 12 of 16 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown; during one first-half stretch, Phelan was 8-for-8. The Lions' winless streak was extended to 30 games, longest in the nation. And Columbia, whose last win came on Oct.

15, 1983 when they trimmed Yale, 21-18, has now dropped 27 in a row. Passes Erenberg mark With his performance, Gamble ran for a school record 100-plus yards for the 16th time, breaking the former standard held by Rich Erenberg, now with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Also, the 21-year-old from Holyoke, moved into second place on the school's all-time rushing list by rushing for over 1,000 yards for a second season and moving ahead of such standouts as Mark Van Eeghen and Marv Hubbard, both former standouts with the Oakland Raiders. Erenberg still holds the all-time school mark with 3,689 yards, but Gamble is only 525 behind with four games remaining in his third season. The Red Raiders (1-6) stalled on their first possession but they scored on their next three.

Their first score came on a 20-yard field goal by Mike Powers; then Barry Chubb went 5 yards up the middle for the first TD and Gamble took a pitchout and raced 11 yards for a 17-0 Colgate lead. Actually, Columbia's outmanned defense accounted for the team's first points, as Matt Sodl and John Alex combined to dump Chubb in the end zone for a safety. But the Red Raiders came back with a 29-yard pass from Phelan to flanker Buddy Brown to go ahead 24-2 before Gamble scampered 28 yards for another TD. Columbia's lone touchdown came on a 4-yard pass from David Putelo to tailback Terry Brown with 13:39 elapsed in the second quarter. But Powers kicked a 37-yard field goal to give Colgate a 34-8 halftime lead.
