ORDERS TO LEAVE ORIENT HUAZlt WUMtN tVALUttb Mrs. J. C. Shull, left, and Mrs. H.

L. Shull, wives of Seventh-Day Ad- Ventist missionaries, have arrived in San Bernardino from the Orient where their husbands are still stationed. Alarm expressed over their safety has proved puzzling to them. They are guests at the home of Dr. and Mrs.

R. F. Tatro. Sisters-in-law, Wives of Missionaries in China, Visiting in San Bernardino Americans in China are at a loss to explain the state department's Insistence upon evacuation of women and children from the Orient, and the alarm felt in this country for their safety has puzzled them. Two evacuees, wives of Seventh-Day Adventist missionaries, made this observation yesterday following their arrival in San Bernardino after crossing the Pacific on ships crowded with Americans who had been Instructed to return to tho homeland as quickly as possible.

They are Mrs. H. L. Shull and her $ister-in-law, Mrs. J.

C. Shull, both of whom have spent many years in China and whose husbands have remained at their posts there. Mrs. J. 'C.

Shull is a sister of Mrs. R. F. Tatro, and both the visiting are guests at the home of Dr. and Mrs.

Tatro, 375 Twenty-fifth street. Mrs. H. L. Shull reached the United States about a week ago, from Shanghai, on board the President liner Washington, dispatched to China expressly to return the wives and children of American nationals.

The Washington was jammed with evacuees cots were set up in every available space to accommodate its 1,500 passengers, she said. In her stateroom were four other women. Her sister-in-law arrived about two weeks ago, from Peking, on the Mariposa, This vessel likewise was crowded, she said, but the crossing was not uncomfortable. The Mariposa carried 530 passengers and had favorable weather for tho crossing, whereas the Washington fought stormy seas almost all the way from Manila. Both women said they had had minor inconveniences to contend with throughout the four years of conflict between Japan and China, "but there was nothing out of the ordinary about conditions when the state department suddenly urged all women and children to go home." "We left our husbands and our homes," said Mrs.

H. L. Shull, "and we don't know yet just why we were asked to do so. We hope our husbands will follow us, or wo are allowed to go back." None of the Americans with whom they came in contact were anxious to leave, they said. "China is very much like it has always been," said Mrs.

J. C. Shull. "People there expect famine, and flood, and war. They adjust themselves with comparative ease.

Of course, the past four years have been hard on them, but their lives 35 Headquarters For Victor and Bluebird Records have been hard for centuries." H. L. Shull is engaged in publications work for the church In Shanghai. He and Mrs. Shull have been in China nearly 20 years.

J. C. Shull is mission treasurer in Peking, and he and his wife have been in China about 10 years. Their wives said the evacuation of women and children of Seventh-Day Ad ventist missionaries alone cost the church $40,000. There were 56 such evacuees aboard the Washington, and 37 aboard the Mariposa.

The sisters-in-law plan to take an apartment and remain in San Ber nardino "until we know whether our husbands are coming here or we are going back there." Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Shull have a daughter, Dorothy, 15, who accom panied her mother to America, and who started school in San Bernar dino a few days ago.
