Indians Open Grid Practice Tonight Coach Doug Smythe Expects Turnout of 40 Football Players Jaysee Mentor to Tackle Backfield, Center Problems at Once; Relies on Brown Doug Smythe and his San Bernardino jaysee Indians tap the lid off their 1941 football season tonight when they engage in the first practice of the year on the junior college field. Coach Smythe expects to have at least 40 grid candidates on hand when he turns on the lights at 7 p.m. Fairly well fortified with letter-men, particularly at ends, tackles and guards, Coach Smythe Is expected to turn his attention immediately to the problems of rounding out his backfield and of finding a center. LOSE TWO BACKS The backfield situation took a tough blow when Jack Porter and Lee Norton, both lettermen, were declared scholastically ineligible and will not be able to compete. That leaves the Indians with only two veteran backs Buzz Brown and Bob Ewing.

Brown, all-Citrus Belt league back at San Bernardino High two years ago, was an Indian rcgu lar last season but with Paul Taylor, now with the Southern Califor nia Trojans, carrying most of the load he didn't get a chance to shine offensively. Brown may step into the regular tailback, spot this fall, Coach Smvthe has Intimated. MAY SHIFT WEBB With a wealth of returning ends-Don Niemeyer, Bob Webb, Sanford Rodgers and Bert Bangle Coach Smythe may decide to shift Webb Into a back. Webb developed fast as an end toward the latter part of last season and knows enough football now so that he could step into a backfield spot nicely. With the oth er three veterans to take care of the wing Jobs, Smythe could make the shift with Webb.

Four lettermen will return for the tackle and job positions, although Harlan Bechtold. a former San Ber nardino High tackle who entered junior college for the spring semester, looks like a cinch to hold down one tackle post. The veterans Include Bill TJllom, who should develop int one of the best linemen in the Kastern conference next fall; Chuck Meyer, Jim Stevens and Dean Trollinger. PREP PROSPECTS Coach Smythe is hoping for a large turnout of players from the valley's various high schools and is looking to San Bernardino and Colton in particular to furnish him with some fine prospects. The Indian coach also has had his eye on players at the Desert league schools, Barstow, Needles and Victorville, and at Redlands High, but because of the conference's non-soliciting ruling he has made no contact with anv prep grUtriers.

San Bernardino, whlph will play all of its home games in the new Orange Show stadium, opens its schedule on Sept. 19 against Citrus Jaysee. Brooklyn Gridders Slated to Join Army Associated Fref) PRINCETON, N. Sept, 1. Twenty-three players have been lost to the army by the Brooklyn football Dodgers, via the draft.

Latest and most serious loss was Rhoten Shetlcy, first-string quarterback and one of the finest blockers In the National league. Dodgers summoned previously Included George (Bad News) Cafego, Sam Francis, Ralph Kercheval and Ben Klah. The second game of the San Bernardino Nightball association's championship playoff, between the Sun-Telegram and the Rialto Chevrolet, will be held tonight on the Fourteenth and Mt. Vernon diamond. Rialto copped the playoff opener, 7 to 3, but may find things a bit more difficult tonight.

Ed Strommer, star pitcher for the Sun-Telegram, who was on a vacation last week and missed the first game, will return for the second contest. Rialto will shoot Jim Burton back at the Scribes, which should mean a keen pitchers' battle. The title series is listed as best three out of five games. ANGELS DIVIDE WITH OAKLAND (By United Press) LOS ANGELES, Sept. 1.

Los Angeles and Oakland split their double-header at Wrigley field today, with the Angeles taking the first game, 8 to 4, and the Acorns winning the second, 13 to 6. In the first game the Angels made all of their hits count and took advantage of two costly Oakland errors. The Angels opened with two runs in the first inning, climaxed by Johnny Moore's home run over the right field fence. In the fourth, Los Angeles jumped on two Oakland errors to score four runs on one hit. Oakland Pitcher Ralph Buxton walked three Angels, allowed one man to gain base on a bunt and, in attempting a double play at first threw to the wrong base and allowed the four Angels to cross the plate.

In the second game, Oakland made six runs in the opening inning, including a home run by Bill Conroy with two men on base. In the fourth the Acoins tallied four more to cinch the game. Bill Rig-ney and Hugh Luby accounted for two of the runs with homers over the left field fence. Generals Meet Long Beach in Second Came San Bernardino Seeks New Victory in Tilt Tonight Out after four straight victories if possible, the San Bernardino Generals go to Long Beach tonight to'rneet Joe Rodgers' Night Hawks in the second game of their National league nightball playoff. San Bernardino captured the playoff opener, 7-2, as Eddie Grubbsv, hurled brilliantly, and with lanky Bud Mayer to toss at the Hawks tonight, the Generals have high hopes of making it two In a row. Mayer was slated to pitch the first playoff game, but Grubbs displayed plenty of zip on the ball in the pre-contest warmup and he was handed the assignment instead. BAD MEDICINE Mayer has been bad medicine for Long Beach all this season, though, and he shapes up as a good bet to stop the Hawks, too.

Manager Rodgers has promised to have Red Trettin back in uniform tonight, in which event he will get the pitching call over the apparently exhausted Bobby Fowler. Trettin quit the Night Hawks recently but Rodgers says he will come back, which, if true, probably means the pitcher will draw down a nice chunk of the series dough for his efforts. PLAY THURSDAY After tonight's game, the two teams return to San Bernardino to meet in the third contest of the playoff Thursday night. Meanwhile, Santa Ana and Ontario clash tonight in the second game of their playoff at Ontario. The Stars copped the opener, 9-2.
