Her resignation has drawn attention from Navy personnel who question plans to increase the number of women in uniform and to widen their roles. Lt. Rainey, who has been serving wilh a squadron at the Alameda, Naval Air Station, could not be reached for comment. Former Navy Secretary John Warner announced in January 1973 that Lt. Rainey and seven other women had been selected "to train in a test program established as a part of the Navy goal of equal rights and opportunities for women throughout the service." Don Moehnke, the group's director, said he was "very proud of the performers," who included in addition to those pictured, Charles Annis, Sam Bordman, Jay Glass, Dan Larsen, trombonists; Pete DeAndreis, Wes Kyle, David Moore, Chris Stroud, Dwaine Titterinton, trumpets; Bob Johnson, bass; Kevin Mrk- patrick, piano; Robert Randall, Susan Cooksey, Jeff Stone, percussion. The EHS musicians played at Sonoma State University campus, with the ensemble winning first over 15 other groups.
