TlrmM-Standard. Eureka. California Thursday. August 25.1977 As usual, tribute paid to Valentino LOS ANGELES (AP) Through the overgrown grave- 'yard grounds, past the ostentatious shrines to people long dead, they gathered in the hot August sun old actresses, grandmothers unable to smother their girlhood crushes and the Lady in Black. The pilgrims had come to the old Hollywood Memorial Cemetery, as they always do on August 23, to stand before the modest crypt of a legend Rudolfo Guglielmi Valentino.

Fifty-one years after he died too young, Rudolf Valentino was still making the ladies swoon. "There were thousands here last year," said one woman. "I guess with the Presley thing, though, this was kind of anticlimactic. But Valentino will always be with us." Among these mourners of The Sheik perhaps 150 of them was a lady who, in her dogged mourning of Valentino, has become something of a legend herself the Lady in Black. Through the years, the lady in black has piqued the curiosity of the press.

Was she Valentino's first wife, Jane Acker? Was she the famous Latin's lover, actress Pola Negri? "1 am Ditra Flame," she said. "That's Flah-may, even though it looks like flame. I decided to come out openly because there were so many stories about who I was." NBC movie receives top rating for week NEW YORK (AP) ABC-TV was in first place in the overall national ratings for the week ending Aug. 21, but NBC's Monday night movie "Buona Sera Mrs. Campbell" topped ABC's "Charlie's Angels" as the most popular of 65 prihe time shows for the week, according to A.C.

The top 10 shows in order were: "Buona Sera Mrs. Campbell," the NBC Monday Mogie, a 24.4 rating, or 17.4 million homes; "Charlie's Angels," ABC, 23.2, or 16.5 million homes; "Laverne Spirley," ABC, 21.9, or 15.6 million homes; "Happy Days," ABC, 20.2, or 14.4 million; "Barnaby Jones," CBS, 20.1, or 14.3 million; "The Super Cops," CBS Sunday Movie, 19.5, or 13.9 million; "Szysznyk," CBS, 18.5, or 13.2 million; "M-A-S-H," CBS, 18.4, or 13.1 million; "Eight is Enough," ABC, 18.3, or 13 million; "The Carey Treatment," CBS's Friday Movie, 18.2, or 12.9 million. Robby Benson is an undersized basketball hotshot who earns a scholarship at a big Los Angeles university and soon learns the pitfalls of an athletic factory. Al first he seems incredibly naive, even for a small town boy, but his conversion to battle-wise jock is convincing.

Benson and his father, Jerry Segal, wrote the spare script, and Lament Johnson directed with an understanding of the campus scene. This reviewer saw the film witli a Friday night h.n i i a highschoolers laughed and cheered. Rated PG, but there's little to guide children about. "MARCH OR DIE" skirts the edge uf travesty and too often falls over the brink. Unlike Marty Keldman's recent effort, this Foreign Legion movie is not supposed to be a comedy, but it nevertheless evokes laughter with grandiloquent speeches and absurd action.

Too bad, because the cast is impressive and the photography superior. Gene Hackman, who desperately needs a good role, strikes out again as the embittered commander. The apex of incredulity comes when Terence Hill spurns a to France wih a i preferring to carry on in the Legion. That's a scene Laurence Olivier couldn't pull off. PG.

The $100 was for bail after she pleaded innocent Tuesday to a violation of the licensing law. The case was continued to Sept. 0. "I keep the dog on my property 24 hours a day, and I pay real estate taxes," she said.

"I don't have to get a license for my horses, so I can't see any reason for one for the dog." The Woolwich woman was handcuffed by Sheriff's deputies who arrested her at home Friday for refusing to appear in court on a summons. She said the town dog catcher had been at her house three weeks earlier with a paper "which looked like a summons. "But I refused to look at it. not going to pay for the license," she said. "I told them if good old Bert (Lance) could do it, I should be able to do it," Garwood, 53, said, adding that the bank "transferred me around a lot" and did not think his joke directed at the director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and former head of the Georgia bank was funny. On Monday, his telephone rang, and "Bert Lance introduced himself," said Garwood. "He said he was returning my call." Garwood, a widower who spends a great deal of his life in bed from injuries suffered in World War II, said he and Lance chatted mostly about politics, and ignored Lance's personal financial troubles. "I graciously in a way didn't go into that, since he was being investigated by so many said. "I was surprised at his friendliness." He said he told Lance to "hang in there." A spokesman for the OMB confirmed that Lance telephoned Garwood, but was unable to say how he happened to make the call.
