AN OPEN LETTER From The Lodging House Keepers' Association, 527-470 Granville Street, VANCOUVER 2, B.C. (Licensed under the "Societies Act" of the Province of British Columbia) TO ROOMING HOUSE OPERATORS There has lately been voiced a great need for a strong Association of Rooming House Operators, not only to enable its Members to co-operate in the establishing of a closely knit organization of persons with identical interests, but, also, and primarily, to safeguard against discriminatory legislation and by-laws passed by governing bodies and aimed at the livelihood of rooming house operators. We have in mind the recently passed Civic Bylaw 3257. cited as the "Lodging House By-law." As it now reads YOUR business may have but SIX MONTHS TO LIVE. To give effect to the wishes of good many rooming house operators, this Association has been formed to implement the above aims and many others that affect, the conduct of Members of this Association.

Listed hereunder a few of the most important purposes that this Association strives to achieve: 1-To represent the views of Rooming House Operators in existing and future legislation affecting the business of its Members. 2- -To represent its Members in Vancouver civic affairs. 3 To represent its Members in their individual and collective dealings with civic, Provincial and Federal authorities, administrations and administrative tribunals. 4-To provde a group of efficient personnel and professional associates who will always be available to counsel and advise its Members: including members of the legal profession who will freely and readily be accessible to its Members. 5 To provide a means of mutual assistance in holding to an absolute minimum the undesirable tenant and to provide, where possible, an index of persons, desirable and undesirable.

6 To provide for its Members facilities for obtaining, through strength of the Association, trade discounts on such purchases as fuel, laundry, plumbing equipment, appliances, carpentry, furniture, furnishings and personal items. 7-To publish a monthly news letter giving all news and announcements in connection with the business of this Association. together with items of general and topical interest to its Members. 8 To assist its Members with their taxation and financing problems. These and many other objectives are the aims of your Association and we need your help them out.

Without your weight being added to that of the many Members now enrolled this Association may not be powerful enough to combat the forces directed at our means of livelihood. We heartily urge you to thoroughly discuss this most important matter with the representative who calls upon vott, or call a Member of the membership committee during the day at MA. 8646 or MA. 0645. and after office hours at TA.

3670 or CE. 8454. THE LODGING HOUSE KEEPERS' ASSOCIATION POLICE HUNTING TWO PEDDLERS Two suspected drug peddlers were sought by RCMP and city police today as they pressed their drive to smash the illegal trade in Vancouver. Thirty-four have been arrested so far in one of the greatest roundups in local history. Arrest of the pair would bring the list to 36.

Eighteen have been charged with possession of narcotics and 15 with selling narcotics. One suspect is held for investigation. Firm Rapped For Delaying Log Trial Lack of co-operation by the employer of a tugboat captain was deplored in County Court by Judge A. E. Lord at the trial of Herbert L.

Carson on a log theft charge. Carson, a log salvage operator of 550 Cardero, is accused of stealing, last April 22, two boomsticks and several logs which had been beachcombed by Gilbert Andrew Krook and were in a boom at Halkett Bay, Prosecutor Paul Murphy reported to the judge Friday that Captain John Gillam, an ployee of Dola Towing Company, is required as a Crown witness, but has not yet been served with a subpoena. The captain is on duty on the tug Stanfast in the vicinity of Valdez Island. Mr. Murphy said the Crown had offered to send a plane for him and return him to his job by plane after he had given evidence in the case, but that the Dola company would not agree.

It will now be necessary, the prosecutor explained, to serve a subpoena on Captain Gillam, but it has not been decided yet how this will be done. Judge Lord said it was most unfortunate that Captain Gillam's employers would not coLoperate with the Crown to ensure his presence without delaying the administration of justice.
