San Diego State Beats Bulldog Team, 20-14 Redlands Scores First but Aztec Power Wins Game (By Associated Press) SAN DIEGO, Oct. 19. San Diego State college defeated Redlands university, 20 to 14, today, an 86-yard return of a kickoff by George Gilliland for a touchdown sparking the Aztecs to a homecoming -win. Redlands scored first in the ond as Al Chang, Bulldog star, opened an aerial bombardment. Gilliland's sensational run gave San Diego a 13-7 edge at half time.

The Aztecs made a 55-yard drive in the third period to score' their final touchdown, and Redlands tallied In the last period when Gene Burson picked up a blocked punt and ran 25 yards to pay dirt. The winners made 17 first downs and Redlands 12. Pomona Trims Caltech, Moves Into Tie CLAREMONT, Oct 19. Pomona college trounced California Institute of Technology 23 to 6 today and moved into a tie with Whittler college for the Southern California conference leadership. Big gun for the Sagehens was fullback Fred Steudler, who scored two touchdowns and a pair of conversions.

Caltech scored when John Jacqua of Pomona fumbled Jack Anderson's punt on his own six and Anderson went over two plays later. S. U. SCORES BATON ROUGE, Oct. 19. The Louisiana State university foot ball team redeemed itself tonight with a 20 to 0 victory over Mercer college.

The L. S. U. team scored once in each of the first three periods, but Mercer stiffened in the final quarter and held the Louisiana line back. Mercer's real threat of the game came in the fourth period when O'Quin recovered a Louisiana fumble.

But Mercer lost the ball on downs. Four down at the fifteenth hole in morning play, the one time Olympic track and field star who took up golf "just to see how I could do at it" fought an uphill battle to even the match at the thirtieth and win the last hole when her opponent failed to get par. Stanford Freshmen Trip Modesto PALO ALTO, Oct. trickily-coordinated running and passing attack of the Stanford freshmen gave them a 47 to 6 victory here today over Modesto Junior college.

It was the third straight victory for Stanford's freshmen this season. Halfback Jim Troupe scored two of the touchdowns and Fullback Randall Fawcett three. WHIRLAWAY SCORES TURF TRIUMPH (By Associated Press) Ky Oct. 19. Warren Wright's Whirlaway won the Breeders Futurity at Keeneland today by a length over Blue Pair and Our Boots, slight favorite in the betting.

Only a length and a nose separated the trio at the finish of six furlongs in which the winner's time was 1:11 1-5, It was Whirlaway's first victory over Royce Martin's Our Boots in three meetings and true to the prediction of his jockey, Johnny Long-den, the chestnut son of imported Blenheim II, found the curved course more to his liking than the Belmont straightaway, scene of Our Boots' triumph. Whirlaway paid $5, $3.20 and $2.40 in the $2 mutuels. Blue Pair owned by three Kentuckians, returned S.M.U. Scores Early to Blast Auburn (By United Press) DALLAS, Texas, Oct. 19.

Southern Methodist university turned loose its Mustangs today in a first half stampede at the Cotton Bowl and they ran over Auburn's Plainsmen 20 to 13. It was a big back with speed and deception, Preston Johnson, who drove the Methodists to victory. He reeled off successive runs of 20 and 21 yards to spark the Mustang's first drive, and climaxed it with a 82-yard breakaway touchdown jaunt to end S. M.U.'s scoring. Johnson was the difference between the teams, His booming punts kept Auburn bottled up in the first half and his slashing runs made yards when the Mustangs needed them.

TEXAS 21, ARKANSAS 0 (By Associated Press LITTLE ROCK, Oct. 19. University of Texas, making its 1940 Southwest conference debut against the University of Arkansas, blocked a Porker punt in the second period here today and put together three touchdowns within a few minutes to take a 21-0 victory before 10,000. Save for that one-period flurry, the game was slowed by warm weather and frequent substitutions. NEW MEXICO LOSES (Bv United Press) EL PASO, Texas, Oct.

19. Texas College of Mines trimmed the University of New Mexico football team 9-7 today in a Border conference game. The Miners scored first, missed the conversion, then clinched the issue later with a field goal. The New Mexico eleven scored on a pass late in the final period. Stanford Wins From Cougars (Continued from Page Seventeen) pass in the end zone.

The place kick by Albert was good. Stanford struck twice with full fury in the third stanza, counting first on another pass by Albert. The left-hander fired it from the State 35 and End Fred Meyer snatched it from the fingers of two Cougars on the goal line. The Indians were over the line again three minutes later, this time aided by a break when Center Vic Lindskog recovered a fumble by Cougar Halfback Frank Akins on the W.S.C. 30.

Albert lofted a short toss- to Hugh Gallarneau and a lateral to Warnecke carried the play to the State 15. Krhetovic, on a fake reverse, scrambled to the one-foot line and Albert diver over on the next play. That ended the Stanford scoring, but the Cougars refused to call it a day. They struck with speed and power in the final quarter, Sewell starting things with a 25-yard pass to End Nick Suseoff on the Stanford 20. Dick Renfro, sub halfback, went the rest of the distance in a series of unstoppable smashes at the line and Johnson again dropped out of the line to convert.

Cornell, growing more powerful and deceptive with each passing week, rolled over a fair Syracuse team, 33 to 6, today, despite everything Coach Carl Snavely could do to hold the score in bounds. It was an impressive show for the 18,000 who shivered in the first cold day of the season.

The nation's No. 1 team, by vote, scored almost at will when it took the notion, mostly on long, spectacular plays. Four of Cornell's touchdowns were scored on passes, three of them from far out on the grass, while Bill Murphy broke and ran 44 yards for the other, Hal McCulough's brilliant passing, the deft ball handling of his several receivers and the desperate running of Mort Landsberg, Cornell's 170-pound back, all combined to make the winners' attack a thing of fire and beauty. Navy's air-minded powerhouse ripped through Drake university in the rain today to register its fourth consecutive triumph by a 19 to 0 score before 22,000 spectators. Pat Smith climaxed an 81 yard drive with a touchdown for Poly and Paul Blanton took a 12 yard pass for the winning counter. Colgate Beaten By Duke Devils (Rv Associated Press) HAMILTON, N. Oct. 19. Scoring on a short plunge in the second period and an 80-yard gallop from scrimmage by Moffat Stoger late in the final quarter, the Duke Blue Devils defeated the Colgate football team today, 13 to 0.

Mangrum Sets Pace In Santa Anita Open (Rv Associated Press) LOS ANGELES, Oct. 19 Defending Champion Lloyd Mangrum of Chicago continued to set the pace through the second round of the $1,000 Santa Anita open golf tournament today, shooting a par 70 to go with his initial 67 for a score of 1G7 at the halfway point. Mike De Massey of Mono Bay proved the sensation of the day, however, when he broke the Man-grum-held course record of 65 with a spectacular 63. De Massey's round put him in a tie with Al Shawhan of Santa Anita for second place honors at 138. Shawhan had a 70.

1 Duquesne Defeated By Mississippi 14-6 OXFORD, Oct. 19. The University of Mississippi's Rebels, shadowed all afternoon by a tricky Duquesne offense, emerged with a second half drive in their Inter- sectional tilt today to defeat the Pittsburgh Dukes 14 to 6. Harvard uncorked a brilliant fourth-period offense to tie Army, 6-6, and came within a scant yard of victory in the final minute of play as 30,000 fans cheered widlly in the stadium today.

Checked for nearly 50 minutes, Harvard drew even on a six-yard pass down the center alley from Halfback Charlie Spreyer to End Loren MacKinney. Spreyer's hurried attempt to convert from placement was wide.
