LOCAL BOY You have often seen the familiar picture caption: "Local boy makes pood." Boston papers claim it oripinated back in 1913 when Frances Ouimet, captain of the present Walker cup team, brat Ted Ray, British veteran, and Harry Vardon in the playoff for the national open title on the Brookline (Mass course where Ouimet started as a caddy. ROUGHHOUSE STUFF From Roughhouse Griffith of Redlands comes another plea for Wrestling Promoter Vic Trenoweth to give a "local boy" a chance at his Orange Show arena. Griffith reports he is in top condition and certain he could "make monkeys" cut of Trenoweth's mat importations. CHAXDU WATS OX Paul (Chandu) Watson, who learned how to pitch niphtball in Colton and San Bernardino and later was successful in the Orange county area, is pitching in Phoenix.

Ariz. They call him "Windmill" Watson, now. WHEN FORCES MEET Figure out the odds on this happening again: Alex Baumgartner of Washington, D. C. was driving a golf ball from the thirteenth tee, and Bob Morris from the twelfth.

The balls collided in mid-air and dropped almost straight down. SOCIAL ACTIVITY Coach Doue Smythe of the Indian gridders has a bark coming; up who. he believes would be at least a partial answer to his offensive problem if the kid would settle down and attend to his knitting. That is, says Smythe. the young man likes the bright-lights too well for his own good as a football player.

The young man is still a student at San Bernardino high but he was out for spring foot ball practice at college and plans to enroll In the fall. TOUGH LUCK Just when he was beginning to pound the ball with plenty of pep, Jess Hill, Corona ball player now with the Oakland Coast league club, injured muscle in his right shoulder. The injury will keep him cut of baseball for a month. LIKE OLD TIMES It was like old times at the San Bernardino Pony nightball game against Huntington Beach Friday night. Attendance skyrocketed to its highest point of the year as the register showed 600 paid admissions.

2.500 HITS Paul Waner of the Pirates became the National league's only active member of the 2.500-Hit club Friday when he connected for three singles against the Giants and ran his total up to 2.501. Waner, incidentally, seems to have come out of his batting slump, all of which, in turn, reminds me, what has happened to the rookie sensation, Johnny Rizzo? SLIPS IN THE DARK Gene Tunney popped into Pompton Lakes the other day and gave Joe Louis a private lesson on how to trim Max Schmeling those wolves at the Yankee stadium have Joe DiMaggio down It's a shame the way they give the guy the razzberry he can't even tie his shoelaces that he isn't greeted with a chorus of boos You could tell the difference Friday it was ladies day and half the customers were women they cheered Joe all along and the box score shows a homer and a single. Jake Powell of the Yanks, who clawed up Joe Cronin's face earlier in the week, has been reinstated and is out of the doghouse, Noble Kizer, ill for a year, will return to his job at athletic director at Purdue Sept. 1. Hiserman Selected Stanford Captain (Bv United Press) STANFORD UNIVERSITY, June 4.

Stan Hiserman, sprinter and hurdler, last night was elected captain of the 1939 Stanford university track team at the final meeting of the 1938 team here. The athletes voted the diamond-studded track shoe, symbolic of the season's outstanding performer, to Cap'aln Ray Malott, middle distance star, and the Thompson trophy for the most improved performer to Paul Ga-nahl, a two-miler. SANTA ANA WINS The Santa Ana Star put over a ninth inning two-run rally to defeat the Orange team 4 to 3. The San Bernardino Ponys will play their postponed game with Anaheim at the Colton park Thursday, it was announced by Owner Howard Bard after a conference with League President Jimmy Heff- ron.

This will give the Ponys three games this week: At Irvine Tues day, Anaheim at Colton Thursday and at Anaheim Friday. Stable owners poted $100 rewards today for the apprehension of culprits who have poisoned several dog and cat pets at Hollywood park race track. Harry M.

Warner, Ross Cooper and Walter Fenwick repotted loss of pets, and Police Chief Ben Fair-brother of Ir.glewood began an investigation. "Jeep," a valuable coach dog and official "watchman" of the Cooper stalls; a brown Corker Spaniel that guarded the Joe E. Brown stable, and "Princess," a cat that stayed in the Tranquility farms' stall, were listed as the poison victims. Cooper, trainer for William Le-Baron and others, was particularly upset by the loss of "Jeep." "We never thought of doctoring a horse unless 'Jeep' was there to see that it was done right," he said. The Pacific Coast baseball league tonight held two checks from the Hollywood Stars, one a $1000 draft bearing the signature of Don Francisco, the club president, and the other for $100, and sighed by Manager Red Killefer.

The checks were in payment of an automatic fine for overly delaying a game with Sacramento a week ago Sunday. The game was forfeited to Sacramento by Umpire Cicero Falls when the Stars players continued an argument over a pitched ball more than three minutes. LEAGUE TOPPED BY LUMBERMEN The Suveikrup Lumbermen held undisputed lead in the Central league as a result of two consecutive victories during the last week. Bunched behind the San Bernardino club are the Ontario Hotpoints and Riverside LaVidas, each with four wins and two defeats, followed by Rialto, erstwhile league leaders, vith three wins and three losses. Borck clipped a half-second from the long-standing mark, oldest on the meet's books, when he was clocked in 4:13.0. 25-YEAR RECORD Jones' performance was a world record 25 years ago, when the was king of the college milers, but Borck's time this afternoon on a rain-soaked track was barely within hailing distance of the present world outdoor standard of 4:06.4, held by England's Sydney Wooderson, or the indoor record of 4:04.4. set last winter by America's Glenn Cunningham. Borck had enough stuff left later to run a 1:53 half-mile and give Woodruff the only serious challenge as the long-striding Negro completed his second straight "double." Long John proved equal to the occasion, however, by pulling away to a two-yard victory over Borck in the 880-yard final, timed in 1:52.5, after equalling the meet record of 47 seconds in capturing the 440-yard race, Woodruff's time for the 440 equalled the meet record set in 1932 by "Little Bill" Carr of Pennsylvania and duplicated by Long John himself last year. UPSETS FAVORITE Woodstra's timber-topping double was marked by a record-equalling performance.

The rangy Michigan State senior upset Southern California's favorite, Jim Humphrey, to capture the 120-yard high hurdles in 14 4 seconds. This equalled the meet record set by Earl Thomson of Dartmouth In 1920, at which time it was a world record. Woodstra came from behind to take the 220-yard low hurdles final in 238 seconds, beating George Anderson of California by a stride as well as two other Far Westerners. The remaining two record-smashers were Delos Thurber, Southern California's Olympic high-jumper, and Joe Moclair, who added to Man- SAFEGUARD against Flat Feet "POSTURE FOUNDATION" Post'ire Foundation is important to active people of all ags. Moclair came from behind with an unbeatable rush to lead two Michigan State rivals, Kenneth Waite and Richard Frey, to the finish of the distance race. His time of 9:21.2 erased the former record of 9:22, established in 1929 by James Reid of Harvard. PHOTO FINISHES Photo finishes marked both sprint finals.

The judges gave Talley of Southern California the nod over Wilbur Greer of Michigan State in the 100-yard race as they hit the tape together. Pittsburgh's Edgar Mason, titleholder in 1936, was picked over Talley in the 200 yard final, in another thrillingly close finish. Motion pictures of both races will be examined, officials announced, to determine if any changes in the placing order are justified. Except for Woodruff and Irving Folwartshny of Rhode Island, who won the hammer throw for the third straight year with a mighty heave of 178 feet, 9i inches, second best in I.C.A.A.A.A. history, it was a bad afternoon for defending champions.

EAST OUTCLASSED Eastern collegians, while saving some prestige by winning 10 individual title outright and staring top honors in another, were outclassed in the team competition by Southern California. The Trojans, scoring in five track events and as many field specialties, met surprising opposition chiefly in the hurdles and the pole vault, which resulted in a four-way deadlock at 13 feet, 6 inches. Loring Day, Southern Cali-fornian who has cleared 14-7 and his teammate, Ken Dills, figured in the quadruple tie with Harding of Yale and Patterson of Princeton. Easterners cleaned up generally in the field events. Princeton's Anson Peiina beat two California rivals in the broad Jump at 24 feet, 6r'4 inches.

John Herrick of Harvard topped the discus throwers with 151 feet, inches. Nick Vuk-manic, Penn State footballer, heaved the javelin 217 feet, 67s inches, while Howard Brill of New York university beat his Columbia rival, Francis Ryan, by more than a foot with the winning mark of 51 feet, 3U inches, in the shot put.
