officials the other day in Los Angeles. William S. Hedges, vice-president in charge of NBC stations, said that all broadcasters should pledge untiring public service, which is "the backbone of the radio Industry because of its nature as an industry that exists by virtue of a public grant." The most effective way to render that service is through the programs that individual stations put on the air, he stated. "What else you say and do has little point unless it is substantiated by your daily broadcast schedule," Mr. Hedges pointed out to his colleague.

In rendering public service on behalf of such war agencies as the Army, Navy, Air Force, Red Cross and others, stations must not overlook the war effort in their own community, the speaker continued. "By tradition, the publisher of your daily newspaper always has been the. leader of your community. He still holds that position. As broadcasters, you must take your place alongside him and work with him for the good of the community for the community Is the cornerstone of a nation." DEATHS The depths of sorrow we cannot Of the loss of one we loved so well; And while she sleeps a peaceful slecD, Her memory we shall always keep, Ever remembered by her husband and family.
