4 DAILY NEWS Monday, November 3, 1986 $63M parkway re reconstruction By CHARLES SEATON Daily News Staff Writer A 2.2-mile stretch of historic Eastern Parkway, a major thoroughfare in Brooklyn, is set to get a $63 million reconstruction that will include its main roadway, service road, and lighting. The first step is scheduled for later this week when the city Department of Transportation advertises for bids by prospective contractors. Transportation Department spokesman Victor Ross said bid specifications were being advertised at the request of Mayor Koch, who wants to see the work begin on the landmark roadway as quickly as possible. The work will include a total reconstruction of the main roadway, the service road, the sidewalks, and the malls. "The contracts will also include the replacement of the lighting system and the creation of a revised traffic signal," Ross added.

Eastern Parkway was given landmark status in August 1978 for its design and its role as the first parkway to be built in the United States. Officials of the Landmarks Preservation Commission noted that the parkway introduced some of the advanced urban-planning concepts of Frederick Law Olmstead and Albert Vaux, who designed other major scenic landmarks, including Central Park, Prospect Park, and Ocean Parkway. Eastern Parkway was completed in 1874 and extended from Grand Army Plaza to Ralph then the boundary of the borough. The re-building will take in the 2.2-mile stretch between Pitkin Ave. and Washington Ave.

The bids, which will be advertised Thursday are scheduled to be opened on December 19. "Advertising will continue thorugh the remainder of fall and continue through the winter, and the actual work is expected to begin by spring," Ross said. Jacob Goldstein, the chairman of Community Planning Board 9, said the neighborhood welcomes the work on the parkway, which has deteriorated steadily over the last few years with pot-holes, wavy surfaces, bumps, and non-extistent curbing at several locations. "It has been a seven-year fight, trying to get this work done," Goldstein said. "We are all excited that the project is now headed to fruition," he said.

"Now, hopefully, the contracts will be awarded to good contractors who will take as much of an interest in the job as the neighborhood does." $3M for shi ship-repair industry gains By CHARLES SEATON Daily News Staff Writer The city's prospects of receiving $3 million necessary to help breathe new life into the borough's shiprepair industry took on a new light last week when two state legislators agreed to seek support from Albany. The funds are needed to entice the Bath Iron Works of Maine to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where it would take over the 600,000 square feet of space formerly held by the bankrupt Coastal Dry Dock and Repair Co. State Sen. Christopher Mega (R- Bay Ridge) and Sen. John Marchi (R-Staten Island), the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, have pledged to seek the money from the $8 million appropriated by the Legislature earlier this year for economic developments in the city.
