MWrton D-Hvitlmi, Mon, 38,1968 Opposition Lining Up State Legislature May Get Sunday Horse Racing Bill By FANNY SEIUER CHARLESTON, W. Va, (UP. Advocates of Sunday hors racing in West Virginia wi have to contend with dltferen opponents in the legislature thi but so far there has bee only speculation that the hi will be re-introduced in the 196 session. The tracks, primary advo cates, are reportedly taking wait-and-see attitude on wlielhe to try to get the bill passed i 1969, after it was killed in 196 when time ran out. Del, Robert Steptoe, D-Berkely, led the battle and tough hard for the bill's defeat in Ui 1968 session.

Steptoe, however, was de feated for re election, am Thornton Wilt of Jeffersor County, who also opposed bill on the floor, did not seek re-election. Both are from (he Eastern Panhandle where pub- lie opinion was strongly agains Sunday racing, and where two of West Virginia's four tracks are located. Newcomers Opposed There will be three newcomers to the legislature from the Eastern Panhandle, one in the senate and two in the house. All have publicly opposed Sunday racing, but normally new members do not have the influence their first year which veteran legislators have attained. Republicans, however, are outnumbered in both chambers of the legislature.

The newcomers are Sen. John Rogers of Keyser and Del. Ward W. Keesecker of Berkeley Springs, both Republicans, and Del. Hoger' Perry of Charles Town, a Democrat, who will join Republican Wallace Fiels of Marlisburg-- a member of the last legislature.

Mrs. Virginia Lett, administrative assistant lo the clerk of Ihe State Supreme Court, has been appointed acting clerk until the court appoints a successor to the late Kenneth Hines Mrs. Lett has been employed the court for many years--even before Hines was appointee clerk in 1950. Gov. Hulett Smith is receiving many letters from school teachers around the state who are expressing "thanks' 1 for Smith's efforts in raising their pay and putting more money into education.
