I ISOH-ing ALONG Merchants Wobbly Attendance Poor Willson Says So Rent Reduction i i i UvAV With BOB WALTON Unless attendance perks up considerably, the San Bernardino Merchants may fold up in the near future. That is neither a guess nor a rumor. It is a straight-from-the- shoulder fact delivered by none other than Elmer Willson, the big boss of the club. The Merchants hava dona everything imaginabla to attract fans to their ball games at Perris Hill park. They have scheduled the contests, from time to time, at almost every hour of the, day but 4 a.m.

Night games have been held both on week nights and Sundays. And so have day games. But they have all been no go. Today the Merchants try the only thing they have not done to date that is, a Sunday afternoon double header. It may work.

But Willson has his fingers crossed. One Alternative Willson givos off only one alternative to folding up providing attendance doesn't increase. That is a reduced rent for the Perris Hill ball park. He claims that would help tide the club over financially until the winter baseball season open's. "The cily might as well cut our rent." Willspn said.

"If we go out of Penis Hill park, San Bernardino will have an $80,000 ball plant standing idle and without any Sunday revenue. "We can at least better that." Willson, by the way, blames too much nightball for the falling off of baseball attendance. Incidentally, and this is strict-ly rumor, if the Merchants disband, you can put a good bet on the fact that George Duncan will revive his Acme Brews to play in the Santa Fe park again. Dizzy Baseball Speaking of baseball, they uncorked a dizzy, so-called stream-Zned brand of the sport way down south in Florida the other day. The game took only one hour and 19 minutes to play.

Average length of six other games played by the same two clubs under regulation rules was two hours, 23 minutes. Fans, however, frowned on the Idea in a ballot taken after the pame. Of 154 votes cast, 91 were mfavorable and 63 favorable. Managers and umpires, however, thoir unanimous anoroval. Frank S.

Wright, University of Florida public relations man, drew up the new rules, which forbid the between-outs "throw around," eliminates preliminary pitching, puts ball and strike penalties on stalling, calls for inning changes at double-quick and provides for immediate substitution of pitchers and catchers when they become base runners. Pitchers warm up before the dugout, but there is no preliminary pitching from the mound. Slips in the Dark Quaint facts: The elbow dislocation In Bob Feller's arm that X-ray pictures failed to show and specialists couldn't locate was found in 1 minute 11 seconds by an obscure Cleveland bonesetter who learned to feel his way Ground when he was blind as a boy. Al Schacht was held up by a couple of guys who got the receipts of his day's work in a southwestern city, but what hurt him (he says) more than the monetary loss was the fact that the robbers never had heard of a baseball clown named Al Schacht. Al says he didn't recognize either of the stickup specialists as American league umpires.

Mike Jacobs, with plenty of bucks at stake whenever he promotes a fight, always consults an old-fashioned Farmers' Almanac to get the weather forecast before he sets the date. Jimmy Adamick, Detroit knockerouter, somehow has missed hearing about a worthy opponent right in his home town, a large dusky gent named Roscoe Toles. SANTA ANA HANDS PONYS STARS PUT ON RALLY IN 10TH TO WIN GAME San Bernardino Suffers Second Straight Defeat in National Nightball League Breaking a 3-3 deadlock in the tenth inning when they collected five hits for three scores, the Santa Ana Stars defeated the San Bernardino Ponys 6 to 3 on the Perns Hill park diamond last night. Weimer, Santa Ana centerfielder opened the extra inning with a high bounder back of shortstop for a hit and advanced when Smith placed a perfect bunt which he beat out to first base.

PONYS GO OUT The Ponys went out in regular order during their half of the tenth. Strano, batting for Johnson, popped out to Smith, while Botts grounded out to Young at shortstop, and Weiser ended the game by strik ing out.

Santa Ana opened the game with a two run spree as Schwann singled and Weimer was safe at first when Shaddox fielded the bunt but hit the runner on top of the head in trying to make the out at first base. On Coots infield out Schwann scored, and when Com stock tried to stretch a triple into a homer, Weimer scored. Com stock was tagged out on a close play at the plate. Weiser singled, advanced on Gil- housen's infield out and scored on Ted Sehletzer's single to give the Ponys a score in the opening frame. A walk and two errors gave the Santa Ana team a score in the sixth when Botts relieved Fowler on the mound.

PONYS TIE COUNT The Ponvs tied the count with a two-run spurt in the fifth on two doubles and a walk. Bill Sweet opened the fifth with a double. Johnson flied to left but it was a short fly and Sweet was held at the base. Johnson walked and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Fowler flied to left and Sweet scored.

Johnson scored on Weiser's double. The Santa Ana club secured six hits off Fowler and as many off the delivery of Manager Botts, while the Ponys secured but five safe blows, two being for extra bases.
