26. The wor kshop il I be co n- ducted by Paul Hopey of Pill' sburgh who is a student intern in ihe Oglebay Institute Nature Education Department Ihis fall. Hopey will discuss cnsts, materials and how solar collectors work. A completed window box. as well as information and designs for olher solar collector ICE CREAM Flavor of December Spumohi projects, will be on display.

Hopey will construct a window box collector during the workshop. The solar devices he will feature are simple and effective. They can be fabricated in less ihan two hours. The unit demonstrated will be a "convecttve room heater that operates automatically on nothing more ihanihesun'senergy. It consists of a weatherlight box that is insulted on ihe bottom and sides, and topped with glass.

An insulated divider is positioned inside the box and brought out its lop 10 form an open Uip" at Ihe box's upper end The "lip' 1 hooks over a windowsill so that the window can be pulled down snugly onto the glass which covers the top of the collector. The main body of the unit leans against the south side of ihehouse at a 45 degree angle. As the sun's rays pass through ihe glass on lop of Ihe collector, ihe air inside is warmed and moves oui the lop, drawing in cool air to replace it from the underside of ihe divider. There is no' enough (ime during ihe workshop, or enough materials available, lo aliow participant to build a unit.
