2 FT EVENTS Art show to focus on in industry giants giants APTAINS commercial in the OF world industry business are por- and and trayed in an exhibition of 25 works from the collection of the New York Chamber of Commerce and Industry that opens Wednesday at the New York Historical Society, 79th St. and Central Park West. Chartered by King George 3d and incorporated after the Revolutionary War, the Chamber was established to govern the practices of business and to lobby for commercially favorable legislation. The portrait collection numbers more than 200 works and covers the entire 218-year history of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Among paintings on display is a full-length portrait of Cadwallader Colden, lieutenant governor of New York Colony, by Matthew Pratt in 1772, the first portrait in the Chamber's collection.

There is also Daniel Huntington's monumental work, "The Atlantic Cable Projectors, 1895," which encompasses life-size portraits of Peter Cooper, Samuel F.B. Morse, Cyrus W. Field and others instrumental in the trans-oceanic communication linkup. The exhibit runs through Feb. 22.

The WHITNEY M. YOUNG JR. Memorial Football Classic, pitting Grambling State University against North Carolina Central University, is scheduled for Saturday at Yankee Stadium. This year's classic is being dedicated to the black astronauts in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, including the late Ronald McNair, who lost his life in the shuttle disaster earlier this year. One of the highlights of the day is the fierce competition between marching bands.

A COUNTRY FAIR EXHIBIT, complete with a rustic farm wagon, orange pumpkins, colorful berries and a dazzling array of thousands of garden chrysanthemums in colors ranging from white, pink and golden yellow to warm reds and bronzes, opens Saturday at the New York Botanical Garden, Southern and Bedford Park Blvds. A collection of the materials and personal memorabilia of the English poet and classical scholar A.E. HOUSMAN goes on view Tuesday at the Pierpont Morgan Library, 29 E. 36th St. The materials were amassed over many years by Seymour Adelman, one of America's most revered and passionate book collectors. On display will be published works documenting Housman's career as poet and author of "A Shropshire Lad," including rare autographed transcriptions of "Into my heart an air that kills," and "For my letters from Oscar Wilde, Thomas Hardy and other noted literary figures of the time, and a birthday card that the 11-year-old Housman sent to his mother a year before her death.

Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The show runs through Nov.
