DEVELOPED SPACE SHIP The extra timely angle is that the scientist, who was the American's astronomy professor years ago at a Midwestern college, is almost solely responsible for the development of a space ship in which a Russian is circling the earth, completely under his own control, and broadcasting to various world capitals as he passes overhead. Although the play is old fashioned in form, it is skillfully done and, because of its up-tothe-sec-ond topicality, it's good entertainment. The plot is synthetic and there are a number, of implausible elements, including a glib ending that seems a letdown.

But in general the combination works. It's an engrossing show. "A Call On Kuprin" is an unusually elaborate production by today's budget-conscious theatrical standards. There are eight changes of scene, including at least three lavish and heavy settings. These shifts of locale not only provide a sense of story movement, but help to create atmosphere.

The romance between the American and the 'scientist's pretty cousin tends to be more a gesture toward theatrical tradition rather than a key element in the story, but one of their scenes succeeds in making a per-ceptive point about the relationship between love and patriotism. After that, the girl and the old lady tend to impede the main plot thread.

Several of the situations and incidents seem of dubious credibility. These are minor reservations, however and do not seriously mar the Play. Under George Abbott's know-ing, economical direction, the performance is smooth and taut. Jeffrey Lynn, as the American writer, has a workhorse role giving a competent portrayal where a major star might provide greater dimension and personal color. Eugenie Leontovich, as his nutty mother, gives such a vivid characterization she tends to pull the play out of balance. George Voskovec has impressive bite and drive as the sclen-tist.

Leon Janney gives a shrewdly dimension performance in the meaty role of the head sleuth; Lydia Bruce is effective as the Cirl, and Claude Horton is credible as the British business man Donald Oenslager has designed the stunningly atmospheric scenery and Florence Klotz provided the appropriate costumes "A Call On Kuprin" is essentially a commercial pot boiler, but it's a workmanlike Job with subject, without being important or chal-lcnging, it offers an Interesting change of diet for warm weather diversion.
