After "Splendor In The Grass" with Natalie Wood and "The Roman Spring of Mrs.

I might add that Warren's days and evenings are being spent with Natalie Wood, whom he is steady-dating so ardently, bystanders find it hard to believe their story of being just good friends is true. After over a year of admitting nothing one way or the other, and seeming to be very smitten with Wyatt Enrp O'Brian, the former Queen of Iran appears to have closed the door on this romantic chapter in her life. What seems to have set her off was a story in a Munich newspaper indicating she and Hugh were close to marriage. Nothing has been found missing, police said. Two windows on the south side of the building were broken and then unlocked. There was evidence some one had been inside the building, police said. (Stuyvesant Ave.) Eloise On T.V. Now By CHARLES WITBECK Dick Powell is giving up "Zane Grey" to indulge in an hour anthology series on Tuesday nights beeinning September 36 over WNBC.

The first show filmed has Powell assisted by 11 guest stars including Ralph Bellamy, Carolyn Jones. Lloyd Bridges. Nic- Adams and Kay Thompson. Powell is a police detective and the guests are witnesses or suspects. For instance.

Miss Thompson plays a blind lady, a witness to murder and this is unusual because singer-writer-night club entertainer Thompson is a very lively lady. The best description of Miss Thompson comes from herself. "I waik into a room and I'm loud," she says. She tries not to disturb people but she can't help it. In this show Kay has to come in quiet, very quiet.

According to friend Dick Powell and the rushes, Kay managed to do this in her first acting stint. Now she wants to do more. "I saw Dick in New York and he asked if I ever wanted to act." Kay explained, "and I said 'sure. thinking he was kidding. He told me about the blind part and then went off to Europe.

I thought no more about it until he called me from Hollywood and asked if I was coming out. The man was serious, honey-darling, and I took the next plane. I didn't ask about the money. I still don't know if it's three dollars or not. Either way, it's O.

K. with me." LONG BACKGROUND It looks like Kay has a new career. Fans with long memories will remember Kay and her Rhythm Singers swinging chants on radio during the thirties. In the Forties she wowed the night club chic set coming out in tailored slacks and raising the roof with the four Williams Brothers. This was a very stylish singing act that has yet to be equaled in the black rooms.

After that Kay became tioise and Eloise became a best-seller. She's still writing about Eloise in Las Vegas, Florida, or you name it. and she will probably never ma dry. Then, if a viewer is lucky, he might catch Kay in a rare guest spot with Perry Como or Garry Moore. In these she tries to be simple, but something, happens and she has dancers and singers all around her.

Kay ca just play "Whisper ins" on the piano and sing quiet ly, but no one will let her get away with it. "People think of me and im mediately they see a big produc tion number, she said with a smile. "Boys and girls running back is the ticket for Thompson. I'm labeled loud with a lot of chit-chat." She has that too. Honey chile.

sugar darlin', applies to whom' ever she's talking to at the moment. And the word divoon is a favorite. Miss Thompson laughs easily, jumps to opposites quickly mentally and has a good deal of energy. "My God, Kay, you stimulate yourself," said a friend. Writing Eloise was really a game.

Ideas popped out of the Thompson head like grapes. She used to go to bed with a note pad on her chest. Fifty brainstorms would come and Kay would whisk them down. "You ought to see the material we threw away," she says. They were all jewels of course, but she cut like a pro.

A SONG WRITER TOO Miss Thompson also put in a few years at M. G. M. as a vocal coach for Judy Garland, song arranger and general pep up girl. She says she didn't teach Judy.

"I don't think I ever gave Judy anything. I sing loud and Judy sings loud," says Kay. "Once Judy, Ethel Merman and myself sang together at a Hollywood party and you could hear us in Hawaii. I must say Ethel was the loudest." Having sung in the days when popular music was at its peak this depends on the era you grew up in) Miss Thompson, naturally, isn't too happy with the present day hits for kids under 10 years of age. The fans in those days could almost vote.

Kay isn't out and out disdainful, but she measures her words when she talks about the current songs and singers. Of the singers she says that Frankie Ava-lon isn't bad. "He has some music in him. Bobby Darin is loaded with talent. He'll be around for a long while.

"The music' is for the very young. It's sweet and very sentimental and keeps a beat. That haunting sweetness is the big thing." Miss Thompson is also a song writer, as you may have guessed, and she has a few around that might go on the market. Probably too much style, but she's trying The songs though can wait with a possible new acting career coming up. See Miss Thompson, for once, come on quietly this fall ith Dick Powell.
