The little fellows were somewhat bruised, but not otherwise damaged. Vergennes Capt. Solon Eaton, 1st Lt. Amasa S. Tracy, 2d Lt. J.

M. Hoyt. Only about 65 of the men who went out were with the regiment when it returned. The Regiment (says the Free Press) forme! a part of the 3d Brigade, Col. Howard, (now Maj.

Gen. Howard,) of Heintzleman's Division, at the first Bull Run. It went into aotion in the afternoon, did good Eervice while it fought, and retreated when ordered, in as good order as ther and in better order than Its loss was 48 men, of whom 24 were taken prisoners. It soon afterwards recruited to the maximum, and for several months did picket duty near Chain bridge. In the Fall it was brigaded with the.

four succeeding Vt. Regiments under Gen. Smith. Its history thenceforth is the history of the First Vt. Brigade, and it is entitled to bear on its banners the glori.

ous list of battles, including almost every great battle of the Army of the Potomac, and of the great campaign under Sheridan in the Valley, which is already so familiar to some of our readers, aa part Of the record of the old Brigade. It suffered ter ribly in the battles of the Wilderness and Spott- sylvania, losing in tba two battles its commander, Col. Stone, and Lt Col. Tyler, killed, and 454 officers and men, more thanthe total of most regiments in the Army, killed and wounded, We need not say that it did desperate fighting, on several occasions meeting the enemy hand-to-hand, and fighting: with clubbed muskets in the enemy's trenches. It was the Second which at Spottsylvania drove a rebel brigade from some works far in advance of the Army, and in reply to an order to retreat from Gen.

Wright, sent back word No, send us ra-tionsand ammunition, and we will hold the position six months." After Cold Harbor about 250 of the regiment, whose term had expired, returned to Vermont. Two hundred and ninety had re-enlisted for the war in the winter previous, and it was a remarkable fact that, while all were exposed alike, the casualties of the regiments in the bloody battles of the Spring campaign of 18C4, were almost wholly of re-enlisted men. The Second was always a remarkably tough and healthy regiment, and was for a long period the largest Infantry regiment in the Army of the Potomac What Brigade is that?" was the customary question when it was on the march. It has had five colonels. Col.

Whiting resigned Feb. 9, 1863. Col.Walbridge, his successor, resigned April 1st, 1864. Col. Stone was killed 5th, 1864.

Lt, Col. Tyler, mortally wounded in the same battle, received an honorary commission as Colonel, but did not live to wear the honor. The present Officers of the regiment are as follows: FIELD AND STAFF. Colonel A. 8.

Taylor, 1st Lieut A. D. Beck-with. Vebmont Thoow. The special correspondent of Walton's Journal, writing from Washington, ays: No small share of the prestige of the 'fighting 6th corps' will be borne by the sons of Vermont, and no State has a better the qualities of the true soldier, since the beginning of the rebellion.

No State has a smaller ratio of desertions or of dishonorable dismissals, and with all my acquaintance with soldiers here in this city, I do not recollect of the arrest or punishment of but one or two Vermonters.wbilethe guard houses are filled with soldiers almost nightly when the encampments are within a few miles, for committing the thousand and one misdemeanors that usually follow the trail of bad whiskey. A better disciplined or more efficient army was not in the service, than that made of the race of schoolmasters, farmers and mechanics of Vermont, and the Surgeon General's report shows, also, that no other State furnishes as large men physically, considering both heighth and measurement round the chest There is justly a state pride, therefore, linked with the term Green Mountain enduring, if possible, than that inherited in 1776. Thi Second Vkbmont Battebt. The Second Vermont Battery reached Burlington on the 20th inst, and was received by the citiiensof the place, dth the same cordiality which has been so marked in the reception of other regiments. The Second Vermont Battery was organized December 13th, 1861, under Captain L.

R. Sayles, who resigned and was succeeded by Captain P. V. Holcomb. It sailed lor Ship Island in February, ATTENTION! New Goods! New Goods! JUST RECEIVED BY B.F.
