Raleigh Register, Bccklcy, W. Monday Afternoon, December TV By CYNTHIA LOWKY AP TV-Radio Writer NEW YORK A congressional committee, a federal agency and the broadcasting industry now are concerned about an old American institution: the plug. Before they can dp much about it, somebody will have to decide just what it is, or at least when it's'improper. For instance: An advertising agency executive recently ordered removal of a water cooler from a television set just before show time. The sponsor was an equipment company.

The water cooler was made by a competitor. "The company was paying one hell of a price for that show," explained the agency man. "Why free advertising everybody wants to get "for themselves but which they don't want to give to somebody else. Captured after a chase, he is soothed (lower) by Edward MakaL By WILLIAM GLOVER Associated Press Drama Writer YORK The girls are far ahead-in Broadway's new talent roundup this season. Six damsels and a moppet have jumped into the spotlight. Skill and luck brought the big break to only three freshman actors." "in the group are Patricia Wilson, Kisa Schwartz, Eileen Rodgers Marion Marlowe, Susan Luckey, Patty Duke, Diana Douglas, Robert Carraway, Tom Bosely 'and Warren Beatty. Risa Schwartz, the only female performer in a mystical hit melodrama, "The Tenth Man," started off farthest from.

Broadway. Miss Schwartz, 18, is a war orphan. She and" her brother were adopted in 1347 by Maurice Schwartz, veteran star of Yiddish theatrics. Ironically, the lad, Marvin, showed no yen for the stage and is studying to be an engineer. Risa however, was fascinated by greaspaint, and has performed frequently on tour witn her either middle-20's blonde and veteran of stock and TV work, Diana Douglas twice previously tnea for Broadway, as understudy to a star who never missed a performance, and.

then in a show which foundered during road tryout, pr. Then her dream came true btie got Cellar billing for "The Highest Tree," a Theatre Guild production. But Dore Schary's atomic-era drama received a chill reception and folded after 21 performances, leaving Miss Douglas, did well enough in personal notices, to muse upon the uncertainties or Broadway and sudden stardom. The youngest in the freshman brigade is Patty Duke, 12.who performs in "The Miracle Worker," one of the street's biggest hits. most famous mayor, Fiorello H.

LaGuardia. Tom' won stardom the hard way, by years of work in stock and. off-Broadway shoestring ventures. The other new lad is Robert Carraway, featured in "The Golden Fleecing." The slim youth from Beaumont, looks Ms role, a naval ensign, but performs with veteran aplomb in the farce, that toughest of all comedy forms. Carraway almost got his initial workout last year, but missed when "A Swim In the Sea" took an out-of-town dive.

Patty has a focal rale in that drama of a teacher i brought understanding to toe deaf mute-blind child who grew up to be one of the world's most famous women, Helen Keller. In "The Miracle Worker Patty hasn't much to remember-a few grunts and one word. But aer pantomime portrayal of a stncK- en child, furious and touching, is a season highlight. A somewhat older TV gift to Broadway is Marion Marlowe, erstwhile thrush of the Artnur Godfrey gang, making her stage debut in "The Sound of Music, age of 5, Miss Marlowe has been studying for the theater for years, with Lee Strasberg, the big man of Actors Studio. Whale her role gives Marion little opportunity to sing, vocal assignments in another musical, have given two other newcomers their main stem chance.

By JAMES BACON AP Movie-TV Writer HOLLYWOOD (AP) Red- haired Patricia Owens, a beautiful English actress says "I want; a man who is in me, not publicity. "Is that too much to ask?" It's not so easy to find such a man around this she sadly admits. "I have never dated an actor in the years I have been in Hollywood," she states. Actors, she thinks, are inter: ested only in themselves. She tells of one big TV Western star who once called her for a date.

"I almost succumbed until he told me how he wanted to. spend the evening eating dinner in front of Ms TV set watching Ms show." Even Marlon Brando, who makes most girls swoon, comes under Patricia's no-actors edict. he co-starred with him in "Say- nara," playing his American wee the art. 'I like Marlon as an actor--but hat's all." Patricia says she finds most her dates among business or rofessional men. But she says ome of them are bigger publi- ity seekers than- actors.

(HOLLYWOOD (AP)--Anthony Juinn, on location in the Hudson ay area for "The Savage Inno- ents," writes -that water carce in the frozen north. Sure, there is plenty of ice and snow but little water and ittle or no facilities for shower tub." Quinn is playing an Eskimo omplete with furs, parka and meiiy seals and He found the local trading post should it plug net?" Why, indeed? Of course, in the credits at the end of the same show, it was prominently noted that the star appeared "by courtesy of Abou Ben Adams studios, producers of 'Ahoy "A film in which the star did not even appear. And the equipment company itself hires press agents to get plugs of its- products and its television shows in newspapers and magazines. Is it a plug when Ethel Merman, in a TV show sponsored by an auto manufacturer, stands in front of a advertising her Broadway show? Is it a plug when the star of a musical show holds up a new record album he has made, or discusses the album a guest Star has made? Certainly they are plugs. But apparently the plugs which concern the investigators are the sneaky ones dropped in without the knowledge of the show producers and agency supervisors.

Some performers including stars are known in the business as plug drcopers, and are suspected of accepting gifts, even payoffs, for their activities. "With these guys, there's absolutely nothing you can do when it's a live show," says one television veteran. 'But the other kind of plugs need not happen often if you are vigilant. In one show the scene was a diner and in rehearsal when we did a closeup of the counterman in an important scene, you could identify the of cereal on the shell behind ham. We made them turn the boxes around.

Sometimes these things are accidental. But when they aren't, you usually find they have been slipped in at an earlier creative level." It's easy enough to keep an actor from flaunting a pack of cigarettes so that the label shows Others are almost impossible to avoid. "Suppose you've got a serious drama -and you must show a telegraph office," continued the agency man. "What are you going to do call it Eastern Union? Same thing with airport scenes. You'll, often see the names of real airlines not as plugs but to maike it real.

And when you want to be sure that the audience knows the characters aire drinking a soft drink you have got'to use one ideniifaa'ble bottle." But while many sponsors are raising cain about plugs on their shows, most have worked hard to get the name of their companies into the- title of their 'shows --just so they can get free plugs in print and by word of mouth every time the property is mentioned. And they are positively overjoyed when one of their commercials gets kidded. Every Trust executed by J. L. Sweeney and Jennie Lee Sweeney, his wife, to Anthony J.
