Raleigh Register, Friday Afternoon, April 2, 1971 Ohio Express recognized nationally as recording artists--will do battle at the Oxford Inn in Beckley Saturday and a against a new group, the Appalachian Mainline. The musical warfare is slated from 8 p.m. until 1 a.m. Saturday and from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Sunday. Top Recording Stars To Meet New Group In Weekend Band Battle At Oxford Inn A nationally known recording group with sales in excess of S15 million will be challenged by a new group when the Ohio Express and the Appalachian Mainline appear in concert at the Oxford Inn -in Beckley Saturday and Sunday. Manager Ed Lilly said he feels the Appalachian Mainline can evoke at least equally good crowd response as will the well established Ohio Express. BOTH bands will play from 8 p.m. until 1 a.m.

Saturday and from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday. In a novel move to give teenagers an opportunity to I hear these bands, Lilly said there will be no beer sold during the Sunday concert time and that listeners of any age will be admitted. He said both the police and the mayor of Beckley, John H.

McCulloch, will provide supervision. For the Saturday night concert no one will be admitted without an ID card. OHIO Express, based in Massilon, has a number of one million sellers to its credit including "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy," "Beg, Borrow and Steal," "Down at Lulu's," and "Chewy, Chewy." The five member group has appeared on American Bandstand, in the Hollywood Bowl, at Ohio Teen Fair, and on the Ed Sullivan and Johnny Carson shows. The Appalachian Mainline of Ashland, is fairly new, Lilly said, and eager to do battle with a super band. The group has recently signed a recording contract with Atlantic.

Citizens Plan Rhodell Improvements An open meeting April 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rhodell United Methodist Church has been set by the Rhodell Improvement League to discuss further ways to obtain a sewer system for the town. PLANS FOR the meeting were formulated Monday when members of the league and the Gulf Woman's Club met in Beckley with Don Summers, district conservationist and W. S. Hume, assistant director of Environmental Health, discuss steps necessary to obtain the system.

Mrs. Donna Lopez, president of the Rhodell Improvement League, said the organization was formed by interested citizens to encourage all the citizens to work together to improve their i Many small towns are without proper sewage systems or water services and Rhodell is one of them. SUMMERS outlined to the group the d.w necessary for participation by government agencies in the project and said his organization's purpose is to improve rural America, using the slogan, "Mountaineers For Rural Progress." R. E. Cartier, director of Environmental Health Programs, will attend the April 19 meeting along with Summers and Hume, for questions from the interested citizens pertaining to the sewage system project and they will provide further information on planning for the project.

Mrs. Fred Williams, president of the Gulf Woman's Club, at- tended the Monday meeting to offer any assistance the club may provide the Rhodell citizens in their community improvement project. The GWC members are stressing community improvement throughout the communities in the gulf area where members live and see projects that need to be started to make their individual communities a better place for all residents. OTHER persons attending the Monday meeting were Mr. and Mrs.

Lacy Meadows, Mrs. U. S. Wydick, Mrs. Alex Huybert and Ricky Meadows.

(RNS) Kee Reports On NBPSD Investigation A decision against proceedings under federal criminal statutes on complaints against the North Beckley Public Service District is under review by the Department of Justice. In a letter to Congressman James Kee, the i Department said allegations of various irregularities in the NSPD had been the subject of an inquiry by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and that the United States Attorney in Charleston decided after reviewing the results of the inquiry that it would be inappropriate to proceed under criminal statutes. IF THE department of justice concurs, Kee was informed, the matter will be referred to the civil division. Should the department of justice find farther exploration of criminal aspects is indicated, Kee learned appropriate action will be taken. At the behest of C.

M. Elmore of Cranberry who has led a group of NBPSD residents in a long time battle against the district and use of its sewer system, Kee submitted questions concerning creation of the district, service fees and other complaints to agencies, starting with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare in June, 1969. It has since been under review by the U. S. Department of Housing and urban Development, the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration and the Department of Justice, with prodding from Kee's office at various intervals.

KEE ALSO called for a special audit, survey a investigation by the General Accounting Office. The Water Pollution Administration reported earlier that the sewage treatment plant is in good operating condition. The Department of Housing and Urban Development referred the matter to me Justice Department. Kee said he will make information available to the public when he receives final reports. There were no injuries. Damage to the DeLuca vehicle was estimated at $400, while damage to the Archer car was listed at $300. The unprecedented meeting will be conducted in the cabinet room of the White House by John D. Ehrlichman, the President's assistant for domestic affairs. Early in his administration, Nixon said he wanted the wives to be involved and to attend cabinet meeting at times. Coleman was ordered to appear in Beckley Municipal Court Monday. A Mabscott man, Chester Bragg, was jailed at 5:30 p.m. Thursday by District Constable J. H. Greene on an assault warrant.

Bragg, scheduled to appear before Magistrate Wallace, is accused of striking his wife, Alnora. Teenagers Jailed A 13-year-old Burgess Street youth was jailed by sheriff's deputies at 3:15 p.m. Thursday on a truancy warrant. A 14-year-old Egeria girl was jailed by Sheriff Zina French and deputies at 10:45 a.m. Thursday on a juvenile warrant.

The girl was later released to the custody of her mother. The highest temperature for the month occurred on March 14, with a 71 recorded, compared to a low temperature of 11 on March 4. The total precipitation was 2.87 inches, 2.18 inches below normal. The greatest snowfall in 24 hours was 4.8 inches occurring on March 3 and deepest depth on the ground was 5 inches on March 4. Alfred Rosenbaum, 42, of 1206 Dry Hill Road was cited by City Police at 3:45 p.m. Thursday for driving without a state operator's license. Loggins, the Southern woman, Coloran, Wilson, Collins, and Rosenbaum were all ordered to appear in Beckley Municipal Court Monday. Local Red Cross Chapter Joins Effort To Free American POIV The Raleigh County Chapter of the American Red Cross will participate in a national campaign to gain humane treatment of American prisoners-of- war (PQW) in North Vietnam, according to Col. Robert Thomson chairman of the local chapter.

The Fire Department Rescue Squad answered a 10:13 a.m. Wednesday call to 223 Church Street where Louise Henderson, 26, address unlisted, was reported ill. Firemen administered aid, and said she recovered.
