110-pound body. But there's very little Stardust left in June Valli's big. dark brown eyes. And she isn't "desperate to make it" any more. "A lot of things have changed since I was on Your Hit Parade singing i Snooky Lanson -back in 1953," laughed the petite songstress who once belted out "Crying in the Chapel," "Wheel of Fortune" and "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?" Maybe I look at things more a i i a now than I used to," she said.

"And maybe I'm more relaxed because I've had it all. I know how it feels to be on top, so I'm not as mixed up as those who never made it." Miss Valli's on the second round of her career, with her second husband, Jim Merchant. The husky, friendly saxophonist and vocalist gave up his job as an industrial engineer to i i i Together they put on a slick song, dance and patter show. "I know what people say. 'June Valli? The songstress started to work us a bookkeeper after a a i i school. "And that story about my big break is really true." she insisted, like a little girl retelling her favorite fairy tale. "I went to a friend's wcJding and stood up and sang 'Stormy The next thing I knew, people were cheering and somebody con- a A Godfrey. That was on Dec. 27 and on a 15 I was on the Godfrey Talent Scouts -and I won." Triumphantly while Stardust glowed again for a moment in her eyes -Miss Valli added, "Then I was really big.

I made records and appeared on the Perry Como and Ed Sullivan shows with exclusive contracts." "And what does a kid know?" she asked sadly, shrugging her shoulders. Then she squared them and jumped into the big question. "I was getting calls from movies, television and record companies when I met Howard Miller here in Chicago and made my biggest mistake, I married Classical Musk Entremont Does Fine Recording Of Ravel United Press Internationa! a i a a many composers in one without losing the consistency which made him distinctive. "It's funny how he was able to do that. Whenever we talked, I was tongue-tied. He twisted words and talked so fast. I never had a chance in any debate.

When I tried to return to my career later, it was too late." She paused, then added, "You have only about five years to hit the top in this i crow's-feet start creeping in around your eyes, it's too late. The trouble is that during those few precious years, most of us are too inexperienced to know how to deal with success." But Miss Valli counts herself among the lucky ones now, because 10 years ago. when she was singing in Pittsburgh, she met a local man who was working part-time as a saxophonist. "Jimmy's an engineer, the first person in his whole family to graduate, c.ollege. So his parents didn't want him to go into show business," Miss recalled.

"But we married soon after we met. and he started helping me with my bookings. a we began working together." And the time they spend together, which now has stretched to 24 hours a day, looks like fun. Miss'Valli, who weighed 140 pounds when she broke into show business, still watches her weight. UPI Science Editor WASHINGTON (UPI) Two out of every i young women with advanced breast cancer show improvement when their hormone-producing ovaries are removed and one in five older women benefits from removal of the pituitary and adrenal glands. i a a removal of ovaries in younger women decreases their risk of breast cancer. This is strong evidence to cancer researchers that hormones have an important role in the growth of breast cancer in some women. The problem, is to find out which women, with breast cancer have the best chance of being i a removal of their ovaries, pituitary or adrenal glands a i i a a a Removal of the hormone producing glands are major operations which doctors would not like to do it they are not going to help. Dr.

Elwood V. Jensen, director of the Ben May Laboratory for Cancer Research at the University of Chicago, said there now appears to be such a way to determine which women have cancer that is hormone dependent. He said at a recent American Cancer Society science writers seminar in a i a presence or absence of a material called estrophilin i the specimen taken i a mastectomy indicate whether or not the cancer is related to hormones. Laboratory tests for this material were carried out in cancer specimens oM28 i a a coses of breast cancer. "It would appear that about two thirds of the patients whose cancer contain significant amounts of i i can expect benefit from some type of i a Jensen said. "But if the tumor estrophilin level is below a critical value, that patient has little if any chance of response to. endocrine a a probably is better treated i i chemotherapeutic agents." Jensen said the ideal situation would be to have every women breast cancer tested at she a removal to see if her tumor is- ori hi c'h a be a treatment. So far he said such tests have probably been carried out on about 1,000 women in 15 major cancer centers across the nation.
