J. SCHELER RITES 0 BE MONDAY; FORMER MAYOR Dumont Civic Leader Was Founder Of Fire Company ON SCHOOL BOARD Dumont Richard Schcler, 84, onetime Mayor, president of the Board of Education, and a Fire Department founder here, died last night at his home, 11 Blau-velt Avenue. Born in Germany, Mr. Schcler came to the United States as a youth. He won several gold med als and a diamond ring for winning bicycle races at nearby fairs, including the Orangeburg (N.

Fair. He moved here in 1896 from New York. During his first year here he became one of the founders of Engine Company 17 of what was then the Schraalenburgh Fire Department. He helped raise the funds for the first pumper, which was Mr. Schcler and his father built and operated, on property where his home now stands, one of the first factories in Dumont.

They manufactured hobby horses and oiner toys. In 1900 Mr. Schcler was elected to the Board of Education, on which be served until 1909. From 1906 until 1909 he was president ot the Board, and during his time In office Dumont High School was founded in what is now Washington School. Shortly thereafter the school became the first accredited high school in the area, serving communities as far away as Teaneck.

Mr. Scheler became Dumont first exempt fireman in 1908. During his years as Mayor (1909- 1913) the town hired Its first two marshals, marking the beginning of the present police department. He was instrumental In obtain ing the community's first electric street lights and sidewalks. Employed by the New York Central System from 1891 to 1926.

he joined the Railroad Building ana Loan Association, New York, as auditor upon bis retirement, serving until 1942. Mr. Sender wire. Elizabeth Garand Scheler. died in 1955.

Sur viving are his sister-in-law. Mrs James C. Wynn, with whom he lived: two nieces; and four nephews. The funeral will be at 10 A. M.
