The current expense portion of the budget, estimated at $9,378,684 is an increase of 8.6 percent over last year. According to School Administrator James Mallen, the total tax increase for residents is anticipated to be 7.5 percent.

Although the schools expect the 8.6 percent increase and the borough foresees a 15.6 percent hike, the county expects a 9.1 percent reduction, hence the tentative 7.5 percent total increase could be expected, said Mallen. The big increases in the school budget are health insurance and garbage collection. The latter has also increased the municipal budget along with an increase in the borough's fee to the Northwest Bergen County Utilities Authority. Mallen said the average house in the borough is assessed at $176,000. The school tax rate in 1987 was $1.05 per $100 of assessed valuation.

In 1988 it will be $1.14. There is no capital outlay expense in this year's budget as the district is in its second year of a three-year bond referendum. The debt service, which is not voted on by residents, is $38,378. SHIRT For Men 30 Off "Except sale merchandise.
