The occurrence at the time was a genuino sen-sation and days were spent in'looking for the jewel. Help was employed and every conceivable nonk and corner explored, tho search continuing for a week.

The Sena Iiieru is no instance on record where a Ity ot the Republicans in both Houses of CELEBRATED senator, charged with bribery and corruption in securing his election, having been exouorated by the legislature which elcced him, has beeu again investigated upon any mutters connected with or growing out ot said charges by a committee ol lite Senate. When any deprecated a flict with the United States troops, Line's answer was, "The United States troops will not fight nv," In the xcitement ot the time, the utter folly of that assertion had no effect upon some, and Lane went on raising his army The rescue was to be made us early as the last of June. Som -time in the summtr one or two of our col. onies crossed Iowa, (on account of the ruffians along Die Missouri river in Misouri,) and reached Kaunas. How many men, any, Lane raised and took with him I never kne-v.

However, ne reached the Territoiy, and in the month of September, I think, went from Lawrence to Lecomp ton with quite an and demanded of tho civil authorities there the release of all the Free State men held as prisoners. It happened that they had all been released within a day or two, and the militia hail been disbanded and sent home. But Line did not go to the United states camp to demand the release nf Robinson, or to make a rescue. No doubt he nuld have rescued Robinson, if bis command were ready for such actioc. But I suppose they were int.

ready to light against the United States troops Now, an important question is, who prevented the threatened collision with lhe troops? If the Fn State men had any way of getting at Robinson's views, there could be no doubt how this toolish project of a rescue was thwarted. Perhaps his previous teachings in this regard was sufficient. It, is worth whiii however, to settle this question beyond a doub', here the last dang- to the ireeriom of Kansas passed away. Brown, which I had not seen lor years, and which 1 think you would be glad to preserve The time of its data was a very critical time lor Kansas.

At the end of 1855 1 regarded the battle for free Kansas as fought aud won. By the most careful estimate, we had at that time, six Free State voiers to every one for a slave state. There were three methods, and only three, by which the slave stitead. vocntes iu Kansas and elsewhere could contend against us. First, by competing in the emigration to Kansas; second, by murder and outrages against our settlers; and third, by inciting a rebellion on our part against the U.

Government For the success ot 'he first method there was no chance what-ver. Our machinery for securing emigra lion to Kansas was in rfect order. and we culd put into tne Territory ten actual set llers where they could put in one. The second method would bn still further from success for the reason that however much the Northern states would tolerate the aggressions of tbe si aye power madeac cording to law, they were determined that no aggressions against the law should be successful. Hence every outrage of the border ruffians in Kansas only stimulated emigration, and made more firm the determinations that Kansas should be free.

There was never a free state martyr in Kansas whose death ws not good for at least one hundred new free state settlers. Both of these met hods then gave no nope. The only remaining one was to excite a Northern rebellion against the Govern ment. In this method there waa real danger to our cause and to our country, for its ing. B-lBw3t Aheavy rain and thunderstorm, accompanied by a slight fall of hail, visited us on Thursday evening. West of us, in the hot torn, the hail did considerable damage. In a conversation with Mr. Conrad Altenbernd you correspondent was informed that his wheat and that of several of his neighbors, is so badly beaten down that it will scarcely be worth cutting. A large number of window panes were shattered.

On Friday, Decoration day, our public schools held their closing exercises. The schools, after the morning session, adjourned to the prove where they hd a big feast of a dinner, after which they presented a good progrimme of literary and Tiusical exercises. These were very interesting and showed careful prepttration and study. The little folks had songs and declamations and those of the higher grides, essays, recltat oiis, Among these may be especially noted an essay on History, by Mies E. Schleifer.

This showed considerable research and hard work on the part of the Miss Carrie Schleifer declaimed "The Archery of William Ttdl" in good style, and "Cheers and Tears," by Maggie Darling; "The Fireman," bv Miss Emma Rayson and an Epilogue, by Willie Carr, were well rendered. After the exer clsee, Prof. Rurey, the Principal, delivered the adoption or the majority report ana that the committee be discharged.
