BARNARD A U.S. AIR BASE IN NORTH ERN JAPAN U.S. Sabre jet pilots who fought Communist planes in Korea now are patrolling the skies of Northern Japan, ready to shoot down Russian MIGs which cross into Japanese territory. The Sabre jet unit started its sweeping, bristling patrols -on Dec. 15.

It had arrived at this base on Hokkaido only the day before. The Japanese government an nounced last week that U. S. planes would attack Russian craft flying over Japan. The U.

S. backed Japan's ultimatum. 'ON THEIR TERMS' Maj. James L. Stewart, commander of the Sabre jet unit, said: "When violations by the Russians continued, it was decided that a unit, capable of fighting MIGs on their own terms, should be moved into Northern Japan." The Sabres were brought northward from a base farther south ine tan, Stewart, rug gedly handsome veteran of 121 missions in Korea, grinned and said "When our boys do their patrol- ing, they stay on our side of the boundary lines, but they are really ready to catch any Russian plane that crosses into Japanese terri tory.

"But we haven't gotten into any fights yet. They have given us a wide berth." The nearest of the Russian-held Kurile Islands is only iVz miles from Northeastern Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island. Big Russian-held Sakhalin is only 30 miles north of Hokkaido. On Sak halin and the Kuriles are dozens; of Russian airfields. i Air Force officers at this base! said that since the Sabres arrived: Russian planes have not carried on their gunnery and bombing training nearly fcs close to Hok-i kaido.

Formerly Communist craft swept close to the Hokkaido line frequently. Now they are staying; to 40 miles away from the line, the officers said. FORCE AUGMENTED The Sabre jet unit augments a force of F-84 Thunder jets in Northern Japan. Thunder jet fighter-bombers are considerably slower than the sleek MIGs. For months, however, Thunderjet pilots have been to the air in almost daily scrambles to meet the threat of hostile planes approaching Japanese borders.

Sabre jet and Thunderjet pilots alike are on 24-hour alert. From the moment bells ring in their "ready-room," they can be airborne in less than five minutes. Aircraft are kept warmed up and waiting. BRUNO WILL BE TRIED IN MEXICO FOR MURDER LOS ANGELES () Law enforcement officials of Los Angeles and Tijuana appeared to have reached an agreement Saturday that Philip Bruno will be tried in Mexico in connection with the knife slaying of his wife. The body of Mrs.

Helen Louise Bruno was found last Sunday in the trunk of her husband's car in Tijuana, Mexico. Mexican officials held the position that Mrs. Helen Louise Bruno was slain in California and then transported to Mexico. But Los Angeles authorities contended she was killed in Mexico and her hus band should go to trial in that country. Eliseo Casas, Tijuana investigator, met with Dep.

Dist. Atty. Adolph Alexander Saturday in an attempt to do something about the impasse. Decorator Styled Here's 17-inch television in traditionally beautiful cabinet styled with rich, warm honey-toned Maple finish. A sensation everywhere come in, see the Philco 1856-HM.

"An American citizen has the right to protection. We don't expect you to furnish a bodyguard for every tourist, but he must have the protection of the law against death or injury." At the conclusion of the conference Casas said: "We will have a warrant for Bruno's extradition in a few days."
