SAX BERNARDINO DAILY SUN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3, 1940 Reported Talk With Two Bandits Renews Search for Escaped Convicts PAGE FOUR ROE AND COLE GUUMEDSEE I Two Hitch-Hikers Declare One Of Escaped Convicts Helped Them on Oklahoma Trip (Bv t'nited Pif .) TULSA, Okla, April 2 The pos sibility developed today that two convicts who attempted to swim to freedom from Alcatraz prison in San Francisco bay In 1937 and who were believed drowned, actually made pood their break for freedom. Two hitch-hikers here identified a picture of Ralph Roe, one of the convict, as a man who told them he was planning to rob a bank near here "if conditions are right." The hitch-hikers, John Belcher, S7, of Paintsville, and Lester Crawford, 18, of Springfield, aid the man identified himself as "an escaped convict from Alcatraz." He was quoted by the hitch-hikers as saying that the driver of a coupe following his car "escaped from the rock with me." Roe escaped from Alcatrai with Ted Cole, Dec. 16, 1937. Both were notorious Oklahoma desperadoes. Prison officials believed they attempted to swim to freedom, and expressed belief that they may have drowned.

Belcher said the man driving: the car which picked up him and his companion "was wearing' a pistol under his coat In a holster and after a while he said It was uncomfortable and took it off and put it in the seat by him." fj. i i STARTS TODAY! Continuous From 2 P. M. HERE'S TO YOUR HEALTH BICYCLING Here is the answer to a request for an article on "Bicycle Riding." Cycling has steadily grown more popular the last few years and I notice a recent news Item to the effect that the bridle paths in Beverly Hills, California, have been turned over to cyclists. One of the first bicycles was called a hobby-horse and was noth lng more than two wheels fastened together with a cross bar.

The rider sat astride the bar and by pushing the feet on the ground, managed to roll along. After this model was Improved a little, it became fashion able among the rich, being called a dandy-horse. A Scotchman is cred ited with putting together the first workable model of a bicycle having handlebars, pedals and a seat. His reward was an arrest on a charge of "furious driving" and this is the first note of a speed ticket and a fine for bicycling. The next type of bicycle consisted of very heavy wooden wheels upon which were fastened iron tires.

To ride this over a bumpy road gave the rider such a good shaking up that the machine was called a "boneshaker." Gradually the bicycle as we know it today was worked out, until we have a very light, com fortable Rnd fast machine. It seems to me that the chief merit of bicycling lies in its combined benefit of pleasure and health-building exercise. The pleasure of riding is In itself so enjoyable that many people are tempted to exercise In this manner who would otherwise be taking little exercise at all. Bicycling as a sport is not expensive, as a wheel may be easily rent-1 ed or purchased, or perhaps even borrowed. I am especially pleased to see women of all ages take up cycling.

-vv. v. Af sr A I i i 4 'M A 1 By DR. FRANK McCOY They will find the exercise of particular value In bringing about a normal development of the hips and lower legs. Those who are overweight through the lower part of the body will find riding a bicycle especially helpful.

Also, those who are too slender will benefit from regular cycling. In taking up the riding of a bicycle, I suggest that you try to cover only a moderate distance the first day. You may be surprised to find how tired the legs become the first time out, showing that certain leg muscles have become lazy. Increase the distance you bicycle from day to day and you will obtain the best results. One of the beauties of cycling is that you may make the exercise as easy or as hard as you desire.

If you wish to make it a strenuous exercise you may pedal vigorously, while if you wish to take it easy, you may pedal slowly. Cycling is of benefit In a health-building way through encouraging better leg development, better habits of breathing, and the habit of regular exercise. It will take you out into the sunshine and fresh air, and will bring the fun and en joyment of an interesting sport. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS (Fruits) Question: S. S.

asks: "Will you kindly inform me in your column whether or not persimmons, dates and oranges are acid forming? I enjoy the best of health apparently and have no stomach trouble, yet I have been almost ill with canker sores in my mouth since the Holiday season. I ate much nuts and candy during that period. Was that the cause? I am anxious to know in particular about persimmons and dates, both of which I "i'ind gently laxative." Answer: The fruits you describe THE INTIMATE SECRETS OF A PRIVATE NURSE The first of the cloistered, code-bound world of woman's most intimate profession probing deeply and dramatically the souls of those bitter women who know men too well, yet must somehow find love in the midst of terror, toil and disillusionment. rin iu i nmmJ are alkaline-forming. It is difficult to say definitely whether over-indulgence in candy and nuts was the cause of the mouth ulcers, however, it is probable that over-eating on these foods may have had something to do with the mouth condition.

Whenever these canker sores appear, I suggest that the best plan is to go on a fruit juice fast for a few days. During the fast, take a daily enema. The fast will often clear up the mouth ulcers more rap idly than would otherwise be the case. (Sulphur) Question: W. H.

writes: "I have been told to sprinkle dry sulphur powder in the soles of my stockings to cure rheumatism. What do you think of this? Is it safe?" Answer: I do not understand how the sulphur could produce a cure. CONTINUES ME EMBARGO (By United Press) WASHINGTON, April 2 The United States is maintaining its moral embargo on shipment of American airplanes and aviation equipment to Soviet Russia despite the cessation of Soviet-Finnish hostilities several weeks ago, Secretary of State Cordell Hull said today.

Hull made this revelation at a press conference following more than an hour's conference with the Soviet ambassador, Constantine Ou-mansky. It was the first time that Hull had seen Oumansky in nearly three months. Hull said they had discussed all matters between the two governments on which there were disagreements. It was believed that these included the moral embargo applied against Russia on the sale of American airplanes, airplane motors or spare parts, aluminum, molybdenum or equipment for the manufacture of aviation gasoline. This embargo, first applied against Japan a year and a half ago, was extended to Soviet Russia soon after Soviet forces invaded Finland and Soviet airplanes began bombing and machine-gunning Finnish civilian populations from the air.

A yellowed page from an old family Bible held the key today to the claim of Mrs. Mary Alice Castro, 41-year-old wife of a Santa Maria ranch foreman, to a share in the $143,821 estate of Mrs. Lilly Bennett Baldwin Howard, fourth wife of Elias Jackson (Lucky) Baldwin. The fight over the Howard estate is set for coart hearing here April 17.

Through Carlos G. White and John Corgiat Oakland attorneys, Mrs. Castro filed her claim on grounds she was born to Mrs. Howard while Baldwin, spectacular figure of the Comstock lode and Southern California land booms, was in Alaska in 1839. Supporting her claim, Mrs.

Castro produced the fly-leaf of a Bible which she says affirms her contention that Mrs. Hewr then Mrs. Baldwin, gave her to the care of Silas and Lydia Braffett, close friends, who lived near Salinas. The Braffets, she said, reared her as their daughter. In 1918, she contended, she was called to Santa Maria to meet a woman she identified as Mrs.

Baldwin. The woman told her of her birth and identified her-self'as her mother. Mrs. Castro said she then went to Braffett who confirmed what she had been told and gave her the Bible.
