A Word With You (R.l O. B. Pat. Oft.) By JULES VAN ITEM Mezzotinto The word or goes back to the Italian meaning half, plus meaning tinted or colored.

Mezzotinto refers to an engraving process whereby a copper or steel plate is first prepared for uniformly black impressions on paper. This preparation process consists of roughening the aurface of the plate by means of a so-called cradle, and then removing the roughness in places by burnishing for the purpose of producing the requisite light and shade. Originally, it was believed that mezzotinting had been invented by Prince Ruppert, a nephew of Charles who devoted much of his time to the pursuit of chemical and chemical experiments. Actually, the mezzotinto engraving process was invented by Ludwig Von Siegen, who was born in 1609 in Utrecht, The Netherlands, and who was a member of the household of the landgrave of Hesse Cassel. The first known mezzotinto print executed by Von Siegen was a portrait of his patron's mother, the Dowager Landgravine, Amelia Elizabeth, and the print is dated 1642.
