Board Opposes Track at Puenfe Plea for Another Race Plant Denied LOS ANGELES (TP) The Cali fornia horse racing board ruled yesterday that construction of a racetrack at the Southern Can fornia Jockey club's Puente site "would not be in the public inter est and would not serve the pur poses of the horse racing act. A. J. Uniack, president of the club, had petitioned the board to inspect the Puente site and deter mine the suitability of holding horse racing there. The board said that "it is evi dent that the war production board and the war man power commis sion are opposed to any racing in this area and would not grant the priorities necessary for such a meeting.

The Hollywood park and Del Mar tracks, after receiving dates from the racing board, recently gave up plans to resume the sport at the present time when government agencies strenuously protested the resumption of racing. V. Friday, July 14, 1944 Page 15 VALLEY BASEBALL LEAGUE TO PLAY OPENING GAMES JULY 23 Six Teams Included in Newly Formed Organization With 10-Game Schedule Complete organization of a team baseball league and th adoption of a 10-game schedule, was accomplished during the meet ing held at the Kaiser Steel plant cafeteria Wednesday night. The six teams included in the baseball circuil to become know as the Valley league, will comprise the Kaiser Steel plant, Highland Tigers, Claremont Torres, San Bernardino Dodgers, Bas? General 30th Quartermasters, and the Lulacs. Opening games will be played July 23 with the Claremont team playing the Highland Tigers on the Meadowbrook diamond. Coach Kenny Johnson's Dodgers will oppose the Lulacs in the opener on the Alllesandro school diamond and the 30th Quartermasters play the Kaiser Steelers in the San Bernardim High school field.

Aside from the troublesome problems of wartime transportation the league managers realized a scarcity in playing fields. Four playing fields are now available and include a diamond to be improved and ready for the second league game July 30 at Fon-tana. This will represent the home field for the Steelers although it was stated that plant officials have planned modern play ing field on the Kaiser plant orop-erties in the near future. With the exception of E. Cortez, manager of the Lulac team, all club managers and officials were present during the meeting.

Dick Klepper and L. T. It was a thrilling contest in which a home run in the seventh inning with one on tied up the score to cause extra innings of play.

Going Into the seventh with the count 7-5 in favor of Camp Ir win, Roy Russell clouted the home run. From then on until the eleventh frame, brilliant fielding and good pitching kept the game in a deadlock. But in the final half of the Eleventh Ardell Schmidt, Merchant's pitcher weakened and Camp Irwin staged a scoring spree good for eight markers and the victory. Pitcher Crain of the winning club, fanned 19 batters. The Merchants play the Mojave Marines No.
