Dodgers Rank With Reds as Pennant Choice Pottstown PAUL Me J. LUCAS, ircury Editor Sports MONDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 10. 1941 Phone 2263 PAGE SEVEN Routs Lafayette Frosh, 40-21 Yes and No! Answer to Football Coaching Rumor not Quinn Plans Syndicate AND GRAY Tn Ruv WIDENS VICTORY 1 0 Buy Boston Fred Fitzsimmons EDITOR'S NOTE: This is one of a series of pre-training camp stories on the outstanding clubs in big leagues. By WALTER L. JOHNS (Central Press Sports Editor NEW YORK, Feb.

9--With another good pitcher, perhaps, the Brooklyn Dodgers might have won the 1940 National league pennant. The Dodgers have another good pitcher now, and rank with the Cincinnati Reds as first choice with the pennant prognosticators at this early stage. The Dodgers won 88 games against 65 losses the past year. The Reds, pennant winners, turned in an even 100 victories against but 53 losses. The Reds had Bucky Walters and Paul Derringer.

The Dodgers had Freddy Fitzsimmons and Whit Wyatt. Walters and Derringer won 42 games. Fitz and Wyatt won 31. The Dodgers hope the acquisition of Kirby Higbe from the Phillies will make up the difference this year. So much so that they handed out $100,000 and three players for the gent, who classed by some as the Bobby Feller of the National league.

HIGBE 20-GAME WINNER Higbe, if your statistical memory falls short, won only 14 games the past 'season and lost 19. Of course, this was with a last-place team wTiich should mean he is a Central Press Photos Harold Reese and Pete Reiser potential 20-game winner with the right club. Of course, all baseball games aren't won by pitchers. And I he Dodger punch wasn't there in 1940, either. The club finished sixth in team batting which will give you some idea of what is needed this year.

Speaking of patting punch, the Joe Medwick, one of the most powerful hitters in the circuit, had a poor year following his injury. He should come back strong this season as Joe is a proven power hitter. WANER A HELP Signing of Paul Waner, veteran released by the Pittsburgh Pirates, may be just the tonic needed if Waner can furnish some of his old-time form. Whether the one-time Pittsburgh hero has anything left remains to be seen, and he may win over the outfield post being considered for Pete Reiser, the all-around youngster who created such a sensation in training camp two years ago. Reiser is slated to play right field.

Reiser spent two seasons with Elmira for seasoning and came up in August the past year with a husky batting average. Reiser is a left-handed power hitter, lie stepped into the breach the past Summer at third base when Cookie Lavagetto was hospitalized with an appendix operation. The pitching staff should be stronger this year. Besides the addition of Kirby Higbe his Higbe. Van Lingle Mungo declares pitching arm is back in shape.

Curt Davis and Tex Carleton have high hopes for a successful season. Davis, who won eight against 11 losses the past year, was a big winner when with the Cards. Carleton, who hurled a no-hitter the past Summer, is a valuable man to have around for relief duty. Luke Hamlin, a big star in 1P39. Hugh Casey and Lee Grissom complete a fine staff, INFIELD SAME It is believed the infield will be the same as the past year, with Lavagetto at third, Peewee Reese at short.

Pete Cascarart at the keystone bag and Dolf Camilli on first. Lew Riggs, a Cincinnati player for years, is on the Dodger list, having been purchased for infield insurance. In the outfield. Manager Leo Durocher will have plenty of material to choose from. Besides Medwuk and Pete Reiser, he has Dixie Walker, Joe osmik, Jim and a couple of rookies, notably George Staller, from Montreal.

Arnold Owen, St. Louis Cardinal catcher, was purchased to bolster the catching staff. Babe Phelps is still around and Herman-Franks, who did amiably the past year, will care of excess duties. The Dcdgers, with 50 exhibition games scheduled, go to camp Saturday at Havana, Cuba, and later pick up their old site at Clearwater, Fla. By PAUL J.
