PcrtyGram Records lug on new rf0lLL THE WISECRACKING and mischievous Patty Donahue, former VrlrCf lead vocalist of the Waitresses, make it on her own? Does anyone care? ww Well, certainly a lot of her fans do, as well as countless other performers who have become stuck in a band and been afraid to venture out on their own as solo artists. Some rock n' rollers don't think Donahue's departure will adversely affect the sound of the Waitresses that much, believing that the true driving force behind the group is Chris Butler, the male lead guitarist known for his discerning, feminist-style lyrics. I resoundingly disagree.

Butler has played a vital role, but it is Donahue's sardonic, staccato vocals and schoolgirl theatrics that have carried the band and caught the real flavor of its style and brand of music. "Post punk," if you will. Donahue's delivery of the band's hit record last year, "I Know What Boys Like," was magical. Even though her voice was unrefined and choppy, she was stupendous in painting a vivid portrait of the story at hand. She was also adept at sustaining the melody line, something a lot of formally trained singers should work towards.

It remains to be seen, and heard, whether singer Holly Beth Vincent, who was announced as her replacement last month, can fill Donahue's rock 'n' roll shoes. dynamite Lp. buys your choice ea. Lp. tut 898 A.

Lovers of slow-drag 'n' songs of the '50s will indeed be charmed by the tune "Your Own Kind of Way," which will send chills through you. BOB STEWART How About Me (VWC-Triton) This new entry by singer Bob Stewart is tailor-made for jazzcabaret-music fans who believe that Frank Sinatra and Mel Torme are the only remaining quality singers. With a style reminiscent of the early Sinatra, Stewart sails blithely through some of the most choice standards of American-song, including "Stella By Starlight" and "What's New." He's accompanied by a fantastic quintet led by pianist Harold Danko. Stewart hereby joins my (short) list of favorite singers. TERESA BREWER STEPHANE GRAPPELLI On the Road Again (Doctor Jazz) Producer Bob Thiele brought us the innovative works of John Coltrane in the early '60s, and adds to his credentials here by enhancing the sound of his wife, Teresa Brewer.

She is a singer Fve never been attracted to because of her excessive pop style, but here, with the guidance of Thiele and the help of the prodigious violinist Stephane Grappelli, Brewer shows that she's got a lot of potential as a substantive jazz vocalist I like her treatment of "As Time Goes By." This is a first-rate album. She packs a powerful wallop, but not a bruise, throughout the album. Can Vincent deliver Butler's probing lyrics with the same cleverness of Donahue? The latter represents one of only a handful of rock singers who has truly harnessed the attitudinal approach of post punk.

The cut "Make the Weather" is being promoted as the hit single, but real rock n' rollers might take to the fast-moving jammers "A Girl's Gotta Do" and "Everything Is Wrong if My Hair Is Wrong," both of which are dandies. Even on record, Donahue conjures up the image of a villainous schoolgirl in plaid dress, knee socks and cigaret dangling from her mouth. The result: a screeching sound that is deliciously pleasing, hummable and swinging. Donahue also saves the album from the mass confusion of the frenetic jazz instrumentation, providing a simple basic sound that rockers can relate to. Splitting from a band and going solo can be damaging for some performersthey can lose fans.

But the majority of performers who've broken away have ended up more victorious in the long run as a result of their new-found autonomy. MAZE We Are One (Capltol-EMI) The most striking feature of this new album by the rhythm 'n' blues group Maze is the beautiful vocal sound of Frankie Beverly. He has one of the most glorious voices I've ever heard. The instrumentation is iwn.ii.h, rreg. 12.99 fcumririirt; Also: Plastic V.H.S.

The members of Cream were a super group in their own right The guitarist Eric Clapton was then at the forefront of Cream, helping to launch what some now call heavy-metal rock but which is really a key component of rock 'n roll. These recordings, made between 1966 and 1969, include such classics as "Crossroads" and "Badge." Clapton is in superb form, and there's also fine work by Jack Bruce, bass, harmonica and vocal, and Ginger Baker, drums. This is a rock 'n roll treat of treats. C. UD-90 minute ultra dynamic D.
