ui Let's hope Andre's fine, not fined ART RUST JR. 1 ft 4' halfback Kenny Washington from UCLA while the newly formed All-American Conference's Cleveland Browns took fullback Marion Motley from the of Nevada and guard Bill Willis from Ohio State. Marshall was the last NFL executive to uphold the color bar. But in 1962 Marshall wanted a new stadium built and needed federal funds; an exclusion of blacks would make him ineligible. So he made a deal for Bobby Mitchell, who led the league in receiving that year.

The Redskins soon hired many more blacks. S.B. from New Rochelle writes: You keep saying on your radio show that Joe DiMaggio was the greatest ballplayer you ever saw 1 think you're crazy Willie Mays could play rings around him. OK, commit me to a mental institution of your choice. I've been smitten with Joe since the first time I saw him trod the tundra of the big ball orchard in the South Bronx in 1936.

On the field he was grace personified, one of those gifted athletes who was able to play his sport as though the game had been invented especially for his benefit. And his consistency was just as impressive: 13 seasons for the Yankees and only twice below .300. DiMaggio, whose relaxed ways belied a fierce competitive fire, was also the best base runner I ever saw. He could have stolen 50-60 bases a year if manager Joe McCarthy would let him. Yes, S.B., Willie was great but Joe is my guy.

1 learned abut i I tne possible fine to be JJt levied against Andre Robertson for breaking the Yankee curfew in the early morning hours when he sustained a serious automobile injury, I was incensed. Here is Robertson, who missed permanent injury and possibly escaped with his life by the width of a Wheaties flake, being monetarily penalized. His female companion a lovely, young, intelligent woman, was paralyzed from the waist down. It seems a situation almost lacking in humanity. Curfew! What crufew? In this in-stand I think a curfew is poppycock and balderdash.

The night of the accident there was a 13-inning game that the Yankees lost to the White Sox, 7-5. It ended at 12:09 a.m. Andre related to me at Roosevelt Hospital that he had been informed that he had the next two nights off. With that combination, I think you can take certain liberties. Unquestionably Andre is the best defensive shortstop in major-league ball.

A terrible loss would have been felt by so many if his broken neck had been untreatable. The fine, of course is a punitive gesture but how much punish- ment are the demigods entitled to extract? Yes, rules are rules, but we live in a society that has made provisions for rules to bend and change as befits particular circumstances. This should not be an Alice in Wonderland world where the queen shouts, "Off with his head!" Are you listening, George? Andre Robertson: doesn't rate fine. Now for the questions remember, this is your space. Just send your question to: Art Rust Jr, P.O.

Box 4820, Grand Central Station, New York, N.Y. 10163. W.L. of Teaneck, N.J. asks: Why did black players disappear from pre football between 1933 and 1946? In 1933, as football increased in popularity despite the Great Depression, the game was becoming big business.

Black players were phased out, the last in the NFL until 1946 being tackle Ray Kemp of the Pittsburgh Pirates and tailback Joe Lillard of the Chicago Cardinals. According to Kemp, there was a gentlemen's agreement among some owners to exclude blacks. The league seemingly went along with the poli- Joe DiMaggio: numero uno. cy. When George Preston Marshall moved his Redskins from Boston to Washington, he declared that hii team was "the team of the South," and he didn't mean Southern blacks.

Football was a rising rival of baseball and historically when vast sums of money are to be made, blacks are either placed at the end of the line or taken off it. And during the Depression, it would be considered unseemly for a black man to earn more than a white man, thus the dropping of Kemp and Lillard. It would not be until after World War II that the unofficial color line would be broken. The times had changed and the war had caused a maturation of the American people. So in 1946 the NFL's Los Angeles Rams signed end Woody Strode and Frazier on Duran: Quitter doesn't deserve to win "JHIS POLL WAS taken at the United Nations, where they are supposed to settle wars.

The Ll war we were asking about is Roberto Duran vs. 'Marvin Hagler for the middleweight title in Las Vegas, Nov. 10. A room full of current and ex- champions was gathered at the Delegates Dining HECTOR CAMACHO: "It's a good fight for both but if Duran wins, it'll be the biggest thing that ever happened in boxing, bigger than anything Ali did even. I'll have to lay back and wait on this one, it's a tough fight for me to pick." EDDIE MUSTAFA MUHAMMAD: "Both are big winners when they are making that kind of money to break up his training routine." Duran, who attended the party with his wife and manager (Luis Spada), had a some cheerful words with Sugar Ray Leonard From the podium, WBC president Jose Sulaiman said, "boxing would not be boxing without the boxers." Then, he almost emptied the room by making unnecessary speeches defending himself and talking about everybody in boxing except boxers Ali, looking not too bad said, "I'm going back into boxing but as a promoter and manager and I'll also do some training." for one fight.

CARLOS MONZON: "For Duran this is a very difficult fight because he really only is a lightweight But, on the other hand, Hagler never fought anybody wTm'm run 1 1 room for the WBC's 20th anniversary party last week when we popped the question: "Who will win the Duran-Hagler fight and how?" KEN NORTON: "Duran is on a high now but Hagler will beat him by a decision." ALEXIS ARGUELLO: "I want Duran to win because I like the man but if I were to put a bet on the fight, I'd have to bet Hagler." HAROLD WESTON: Hagler will stop him in 8, giving Duran the worst beating of his career." BILLY GRAHAM: "Hagler will knock him out and I see it happening early." JUAN LA PORTE: "I like Duran by a decision." NINO BENVENUTI: "It will be the greatest fight of all time and I see Hagler winning it by decision." BOB FOSTER: "Hagler by an early knockout" EMILE GRIFFITH: "Hagler by a KO inside 12." PAT PETRONELLI (co-manager of Marvin Hagler): "I believe it will go the full 15 and Marvin will win it because he'll be in the best shape of his career. He's not at this party tonight, because he didn't want WHEELING DISCOUNTS Son Also "I'm a Hagler man, he should kill Duran," said Frazier.

"I want to see it happen because I still hold that thing against Duran. Walking out of the ring and quitting against Leonard and taking all that money, he insulted all the fighters who ever fought in a ring. There he is and I don't care if he is listening, the man ought to be shot on sight I'll never forgive Duran for what he did. He showed no pride and I like to think a FOR SALE-1800-NEYV CHEVROltTS.
