26, the trumpeter who has won double Grammies for both his classical and jazz music will sound off on the stage of the Joyce Theater, Eighth Ave. and 19th He won't stop until Jan. 5. Marsalis weds a formidale technique to a potent improvisational imagination, and the result is an amazing command of both classical and jazz music, two seemingly divergent traditions. His Grammies reflect that: In '84, he won for both "Think of One" (jazz) and "Trumpet Concertos" (classical).

In '85, he repeated with "Hot House Flowers" (jazz) and a classical album of baroque trumpet. Though Marsalis is only 24, he's been at this game a while. Al Hirt gave him his first trumpet at 6 and he began to study the classics at 12. At 18 he was at Juilliard. For this series of concerts at the Joyce, he will head a quartet featuring pianist Marcus Roberts, bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Jeff Watts.
