For years she ranted and raved about the men getting so much more money for their efforts. She demanded that women be treated equally for purses to be raises. And she was successful, as shown by the official 1974 money lists released by the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association.

The top male money maker in tennis last year was controversial Jimmy Connors, who pocketed $281,309. The top female was quiet, cute Chris Evert, who received $261,460 for her patented two-handers. She was only about $20,000 short of her former fiance. $261,400 almost doubled the previous high for woman. Billie Jean held the record when she earned $119,000 in 1972.

Last year Billie Jean was second, but grossed $173,225. Sure, most of the girls mind Billie Jean getting out because now they have to compete against her. But. on the other hand, the girls will miss Ms. King.

When the roaring for more subsided, Gervin hud 51 points and the Spurs had fourth win in a fow a lop-sided, ho-hum- ing pasting of the Memphis Sounds. The 22-year-old forward is probably on the verge of becoming a basketball folk hero in San Antonio after scoring 44 points in Indianapolis Sunday and coming home to hit 23 of 34 field goals in Convention Center Arena. The game was stashed away late in the third quarter as the Spurs zipped the ball around the court in a fashion that produced a San Antonio-Dallas franchise record of 39 assists.

Most of the those passes were going to Gervin as the lanky forward has apparently discovered the basket-popping merits of running around when someone else on his team has the ball. Celtic owner indicted TRENTON, N.J. (AP) Robert Schmertz, owner of the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association, was indicted by a state grand jury Wednesday on bribery- conspiracy charges. Schmertz and another businessman from Lakewood. N.J., Donald Safran, were accused of paying $31,730 in bribes to a public official to win approval of a $200 million senior citizens project in Ocean County. The indictment also named as a defendant Leisure Technology a development company run by Schmertz.

NBA Commissioner J. Walter Kennedy said no immediate action was contemplated against the owner of the world champion Celtics who are leading their division again this year. Kennedy said in a statement, have been informed of the charges made against Mr. Schmertz and ill of course closely observe the proceedings against him. If and when any action by the NBA seems to me to be appropriate I will take such action after consultation with the board of governors.

Now is not the time for such action or for any futher comment by the The indictment charges that the bribes went to Joseph S. Portash, who as an Ocean County freeholder who lost a campaign for re-election last year. Schmertz is from Lakewood and Safran was a Lakewood insurance consultant who now lives in Florida. The indictment said the bribes were made between April 1,1971 and Dec. 12, 1972.

It said Portash received an initial $15,000 payment and was to receive $15,000 in continuing yearly payments. Portash was not indicted and was expected to be the key witness. He was originally described as the target of the probe. Schmertz and Safran face maximum jail terms of 15 years each and fines of $5.000 apiece if convicted. Leisure Technology Corp.

could be fined $4,000. The indictment charged that Portash was given money to use his positions as freeholder and also as mayor of Manchester Township to approve the senior citizens project. The state attorney general's office credited The Asbury Park Press with helping to expose the charges through investigative reporting and by cooperating with officials. Costa was one of seven members of the North American Soccer League champion Los Angeles Aztecs obtained by the Thunder in a trade last month. He had not signed a contract with San Antonio, so the trade is actually for the rights to the 26-year-old Brazilian.

Ridley was also a mid- BOB RIDLEY fielder for Dallas, but Thunder Coach Alex Perolli plans to use him as a defender here. Ridley is a 311-year-old native of Portsmouth. England, who has played two seasons with Dallas as well as in South Africa and Australia. Perolli said the Thunder was in fine position for bargaining after obtaining four midfielders from the Aztecs and he felt the trade would strengthen the local club's back line. Ridley has a coaching certificate and is expected to he of great value in helping the Thunder promote youth socccer in San Antonio.

He owns a sporting goods store in Dallas, but said he was happy to be coming to San Antonio. He and Tornado Coach Ron Newman have had differences in the past and Ridley wanted to be traded. This brings to nine the number of players under contract to the Thunder. General Manager Mike Boyle said he expected other personnel transactions to be completed soon as the team prepares for the opening of its first training camp March 1 at North East Stadium.
