DAILY NEWS Tuesday, December 31, 198S it KEEDLEPLAY By ERICA WILSON l J ' f r 8 Hid herbai designs have that fresh and timeless OMETIMES ancient things S appear to be the most modern. Needlework inspired from old herbal designs can look as fresh and timeless years from now as they do today. And what a wealth of lovely material there is to choose from. The charm of old woodcuts illustrating the herbals is that they were so simple and clear-cut. They had to be. The illustrations showed the roots clearly, as well as the leaf, the bud and a fully-developed blossom. The simplicity and delicate shadings of color in the designs make them ideal projects on which to perfect crewel's cornerstone stitch the long-and-short. Practice on a scrap of fabric with tapestry shading long-and-short stitch worked vertically, so you can learn to blend colors without worrying about changing stitch direction just one thing at a time. Work a line of split stitches along the top of the band. Come up below this row and go down over the split stitches; come up again with a longer stitch right next to the first stitch and go over the split-stitch row again. Continue along, keeping the stitches straight up and down, alternately long and short. The short stitch should be three-quarters the length of the long one not too short because the succeeding rows all fit back into the preceding ones. Once you begin your flowers, mark light lines on each petal or leaf with a pencil or Trace Erase pen, to keep the direction of stitches flowing smoothly. Don't change directions too quickly. Make a row of split stitches along the petal edge and begin stitching in the center of the petal, working outward. Your row of split stitches acts like a brick wall, raising the stitches at the edge and giving your petals a crisp outline. - Tiny little leaves look delicate when worked in satin stitch, shading with long-and-short in another color directly on top (since it's almost impossible to fit two rows of long-and-short in a small space). Leaf veins can be added in rows of split stitch on top of the other stitching. (This is one of the advantages of crewel embroidery; stitches can be layered on top of one another to give a textured effect.) Try working the roots in coral stitch or featherstitch.
