1978 Bi 84 VOSHAHL T'SMAN AT VA the 2 in true, 23, Our 9:15 2 called in BRESLIN JIMMY BRESLIN (Continued from page 4) nounced that he had 23 witnesses to the death of Arthur Miller. These witnesses were independent of the witnesses found so far by the police. July 3 Is Before July 4 Gold said the witnesses would go before a grand jury "on or about July 3." It is now June, and we must wait for July before justice even tries to begin, and when it does it will begin on the 3d of the month and this usually comes directly before the 4th of July, upon which day no American grand juror will work. After this, all sorts of days, Pope Warns Of Nuclear Peril Vatican City (UPI)-Pope Paul began the 16th year of his reign yesterday with a warning of the nuclear "dangers that science and technology have turned against human life." The 80 -year-old pontiff asked at his weekly general audience: "Who today can measure the tragedy of the dangers that science and technology have turned against human life, that can dash the face of the earth?" The Pope also referred to "this fleeting and almost ended papacy," a reference to his failing health. The Pope suffers from occasional bouts of the flu and a deteriorating arthritic condition in the legs that makes it painful for him to walk.

Why would Gold not take his 23 witnesses yesterday morning and start placing them into a grand jury immediately? Here, at the start of the summer, as we experience the grumblings of a most ancient evil, racial anger, why not show by unusual concern and immedia.

cy that the death of Arthur Miller will not be a matter that fades away? Oh, but this is not a reasonable way to conduct business, the bureaucrats remind you. After all, people on the publie payroll are not attuned to speed. Clerks must clerk, typists must type, investigators must investigate. All must attend lunch. In the world of the law, they talk about waiting 4 month as if it were only a day.

Forever, authority has used this tactic to frustrate the poor. By being reasonable, authority can show that the poor are impatient and inexperienced and without understanding. Let them think it is a simple matter; a reasonable explanation tells you that it is complex. This is the formula upon which all politicians and their appointees exist. Miller died in the hands of the police.

Therefore, the police commissioner, McGuire, says that, why, of course he would not relieve any officers from performing duties in the same area in which the man was killed. He would not make even this tiny motion because, being quite reasonable, nothing has been determined to be wrong so far. The man was alive and now he is dead and we, of course, take no actions because to do so would be unreasonable. Just as unreasonable as it would be to ask Congressman Richmond, whose presence is resented by the mourners, to remove himself. Washington (UPI) Special census takers will scout bars, pool halls and slums to ferret out illegal aliens from Mexico for the 1980 census, Census Bureau Director Manuel Plotkin said yesterday.

Illegal Mexican aliens living in this country are believed to number at least 5 million and Plotkin said that counting them may be the most difficult problem in conducting the new census. He said the bureau will hire 200 "community service representatives" members of minority groups who know the local minority populations well in an attempt to get a correct count. LUTHER W. YOUNGDAHL Washington (AP) -Federal Judge Luther W. Youngdahl, 82, a former three term Republican governor of Minnesota who earned national fame for his court rulings in the McCarthy era, died at his home here yesterday.

He achieved notoriety as a judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia when, in 1952, he dismissed as unconstitutional key parts of the government's case against Owen J. Lattimore, a university professor who was the prime target of the anti-Communist campaign of the late Republican Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy of Wisconsin.

MARK ROBSON London (AP) Veteran film director and producer Mark Robson, 64, died Tuesday in Wellington Hospital after a heart attack, the U. S. Embassy said yesterday. The embassy spokesman said Robson's body will be flown to Los Angeles today, accompanied by his widow and three daughters. Among films he directed were "Peyton Place' and "Valley of the Dolls." On June 1978, Survived by wife Connie Lurie, daughter Mrs Brian Blackwelder, Ft Lauderdale Fla, son Robert Lurie, New York 1 2 brothers and 3 grandchildren. Funeral services held June 14, Brunswick, Ga. 10H9 AM 089 OWN on Mex Aliens The census was criticized in 1970 for missing members of minority groups. By the bureau's own estimate, derived from birth and death figures and other public records, the 1970 census undercounted the population by 2.5%, including 7.7% of the black population. The census put the population at 203 million that year.

Plotkin said that Mexicans living in the U.S. illegally naturally would be suspicious of census takers, even though the bureau will try to get the message across that it will give information on individuals to no other government agencies. OBITUARY REV. HOWARD CONATSER Dallas (AP) The Rev. Howard Conatser, 52, who declared that "only God" could cure his terminal cancer, died of the disease Monday.

Conatser and his congregation at Beverly Hills Baptist Church became Baptist leaders in the worldwide neoPentacostal movement of the 1970s.
