Cockrell requests additional police A request for an increase in authorized strength of the city police department was made Tuesday by Mayor Pro Tern Lila Cockrell. Cockrell made the request through a written turn House doomed 108 years seems after Mr By BEN KING The 108 -year-old Yturri House may be standing for only three more months. City Water Board trustees unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday giving the San Antonio Conservation Society 90 days to raise $100,000 to restore or relocate the limestone structure. If funds cannot be raised, the house will be demolished. The area will eventually be converted into parking for employes, John Schaefer, chairman of the board said.

The house is located on East Commerce adjacent to the headquarters. seems they are determined to destroy the said Beverly Blount, president of the Conservation Society. The house, constructed in 1868, was refurbished and used as tourist souvenir shop in 1968 for HemisFair. But it has remained vacant since. Schaefer explained hands were tied in this because the board can use funds only for projects directly connected with San water system.

Since the board has been unable to maintain the building. Schaefer said, it has become a health hazard and the target of numerous attacks by vandals. After the board passed the Yturri House resolution, Mrs. Blount said she know the chances would for the society to raise the necessary funds or find an organization to take over the house. In November, Bexar County Com.

Frank Vaughan Jr. offered to completely refurbish the building to be used for office space if it could be leased by the county for $1 a year. However, offer was turned down because the board said it could not spare the four parking spaces that would be needed by county employes. While answering a question by Schaefer about the historical significance, Mrs. Blount said that no historical events have occurred there, the Yturri House is still very important because of its early Victorian The limestone basement would make relocation of the building extremely difficult, Duncan Muckelroy, preservation coordinator of the Texas Historical Commission, said.

Floret 923-6339 Pound takes a plunge Ntw VOSK times SERVICE PARIS Reports that Persian Gulf states no longer would accept sterling in payment for 011 drove the pound to historic lows Tuesday.

The Bank of England used an estimated $250 million to try to prop up the currency. It was the hardest battering that sterling has taken in recent months, pointing up the worsening state of financial position some 12 months after the oil- producing states raised their prices. Confirmation In New York, the Exxon Corp. confirmed reports that Saudi Arabia had informed the Arabian American Oil Co. it did not any further payments in sterling.

About 25 per cent of tax and royalty payments to the Saudis have been in the British currency. Exxon is one of four United States oil companies with an equity interest in Aramco. The refusal to accept sterling is regarded here as a severe blow to the world role of the pound and thus to precarious international financial position. The worldwide use of pounds and of dollars as trading and reserve currencies have long given Britain and the U.S. privileged positions.

The market setback dropped the pound more than 1 cents in its value against the dollar (to $2.3195) and produced sharp declines against other leading currencies. It came as Britain's leaders tried to gather support in Europe and the Middle East for urgent cooperation in the recycling of oil money back to deficit nations like Britain that may soon need it. Prime Minister Harold Wilson was here in Paris at a Common Market summit conference trying to whittle down the cost of British membership in the community and to spur greater; European efforts toward getting some institutionalized recycling fund into operation as soon as possible. The latest descent of sterling began late last week when reserve figures for last month showed a sharp decline in the petrodollar investments the British have been counting on to finance their payments deficits.

Deficits Largely because of higher- priced oil. the British have been running deficits on trade and service accounts with foreign nations of around $1 billion a month. In earlier months most of this came back in bank deposits and other investments that oil states made in London. In November the petrodollar investments slumped to $1-0 million, according to Bank of England figures. To help fill the hole the British drew down on a 2.5 billion Eurodollar borrowing made last spring for just such an emergency.

They took $750 million and now have approximately half of the $2.5 billion still available. In addition, the British got a $400 million deposit from Iran as part of a previously agreed arrangement in which that oil state said it would lend British public authorities $1.2 billion. The $400 million went to the British Water Council. Max Martinez 3 nr.
