Winter whitens N. Texas ASSOCIATED PRESS Wintry weather whitened the Texas Panhandle and South Plains with snow Tuesday. Accumulations of up to four inches were expected by nightfall. The rain and snow was expected to yield to clear skies and colder temperatures later in the evening. A warning was posted for West Texas along and north of a line from Midland-Odessa to San Angelo.

Snow mixed with light rain fell in the afternoon with accumulations of one to three inches. Ice closed the Trans Mountain road in El Paso, and Alpine reported two inches of snow early Tuesday. Elsewhere across the state skies were cloudy. Light to moderate rain fell over much of Central Texas and the central coastal sections of South Texas. Winds were variable with a moderate northwesterly flow along the coast.

Generally southerly winds fanned other areas. Noon temperatures were in the 40s with Marfa the only point below the freezing mark with a 31.
