BMT Elevated Line, running about one mile from Sutphin Blvd. west to 127th SU has been turned over to the city by the Transit Authority for eventual demolition. Councilman Morton Povman (D-Kew Gardens Hills) said he has been informed by city officials that the demolition of the superstructure and the reconstruction of Jamaica Ave. below the elevated line will cost almost S1.6 million. A preliminary design for demolition and reconstruction work will be ready in January and be made available for public comment The actual tearing down of the elevated line, which was constructed in 1917, is scheduled to begin in mid-1990.

Transit officials have said that they expect the new Archer Ave. Subway Line to be in operation by that time. The elevated line now ends at 121st St. in Richmond Hill, and a spur leads into the Archer Ave. Subway from about 127th St.

"This development." Povman said, "is a positive step forward in the re-development of the Downtown Jamaica commercial district and the mixed residential-commercial re-vitalization of the Richmond Hill East area." He added. "Local land values should rise and investors will be more interested in that section."
