The Scranton aengerrunde the oldest singing society in the city, which for the past twenty five years has given the children of the members a treat with their annual Christmas tree festival, will disconiinu this practice for 1917.

The society desires to assist the government in the conservation movement, which was the prlmarv object in discontinuing the festivals. Noodham's Livery and Undertaking Establishment 1506 Pittston Arenue COMING YEAR TO BE VERY BUSY ONE Many Improvements of a Public Nature Contemplated for This Section. Residents are wondering what the year 191S holds in store for this part of the city, and they hope for unex ampled Improvements and great pos sibilities. Efforts were made last year to resur rect the idea of building a viaduct connecting South Scranton and East Scranton. with the result that the coining year may see the construction of the bridge. It would connect with South Scranton at Irving avenue and would jive a direct route to Nay Aug park and the boulevard without mak ing a detour through the central city.

Other improvements looked forward to is the resurfacing of the Cedar ave nue pave from Hickory to Birch streets with asphalt. The condition of this roadbed is deplorable and the representative in count from this section is expected to give this, attention in the Spring of the yea. Property owners declare that their buildings axe being ruined by heavy trucks and other vehicles which have worn into the old pavements laid about twenty years ago. Merchants also complain that their husimss is impaired, due to this con dition. Automobiles and others travel by way of Pittston avenue to and from the central city to avoid the Cedar annua pave, while Cedar ave nue is the most direct route.

The German Alilance, from which operate the Waldorf park on the East Mountain, have had plans drawn and as soon as peace is declared will be gin building operations on a new and up to date club house to be erected on their plot of ground. Improvements to the main park at an expenditure of thousands of dollars frs also under consideration and will probably become a reality as soon as conditions warrant it. Practically all picnic and other outings during tl.o summer are being conducted at this pionio grounds and the officers of the organisation feci that it is their duty to make the necessary improvements. The business acumen shown by the mer chants of this section in forwarding the interest of themselves and the community at large by making pos sible the giving to the puDllc a metropolitan issue that tends to raise the standard of sectional pride and should be appreciated.
