Page 18 Ottawa Journal Friday, January 26, 1979 The features page People in the news Ali to referee Amin battle royal' Entertainment 'BE HEARD' 2 3 4 3 2 7 3 Japanese wrestler Antonio Inoki announced Thursday in Tokyo, he will be fighting Ugandan President Idi Amin in Kampala this June with his friend and world boxing champion Muhammad Ali as referee. Ali will get $1 million and Inoki $500,000, but Amin, being a public-figure, will not receive any money for himself. However, half of the net profit coming from the proposed Amin-Inoki encounter, described as a "martial arts fight," will be contributed to Uganda. The tall and heavy Japanese wrestler, in announcing the June 10 fight at a news conference, did not appear worried about meeting Amin. Details of fight rules are being worked out and they will be made known in Feburary when Inoki goes to Kampala for signing of a formal contract.

The promoter of the bout, Yoshio Ko who has done such things as organize a search for the Loch Ness monster, said the fight will be televised around the world. Ko said it will bring about $15 million in revenue. Ko said plans called for a 15-round bout in a soccer stadium in Kampala, and that Ali would wear headgear, gloves and a flak jacket while refereeing the match. Amin is a former national heavyweight boxing champion. Inoki claims he is Japan's professional wrestling champion.

No confirmation of their roles was available here from Amin or Ali. Ko was the promoter of the Ali-Inoki fight in Tokyo in June 1976. It proved to be unpopular among boxing and wrestling fans as Inoki moved around the ring in a crab-like fashion and Ali stood and looked down on the wrestler, hurling abuses instead of punches throughout the 15-round encounter. The fight was officially declared a draw. Brothers Perpetual late-comers Dear Dr.

Brothers: What can you do with someone who's always late. I loathe having to wait. I work on a tight schedule and have very little time to waste just standing around. I like this guy, however, and I would hate to break up our relationship just because he seems to consider my time worth nothing. By the time he does show up for a date, I'm usually so mad, I'm ready to scream.

I don't, and I spend most of our evening trying to keep cool and not explode. Often, I end up with a real tension headache. I can't go on this way. Why does he do it to me? Is he trying to tell me something? F. A.

Dear F. I don't know, but unless you let him know that you're not going to tolerate his tardiness, he's not apt to change. You're only hurting yoursif by keeping all that rage bottled up. It's not going to help him and it will destroy you. If he's Both vulnerable.

What kind of a friendship can you have if you don't repect each other enough to be able to share your feelings and needs? Usually, the person who has a running battle with the clock and is consistently late is rebelling against authority.

He probably has never resolved his adolescent battles with the authority in the home, that of Mom and Dad. If this quarrel over rules and regulations is never resolved, the fight continues against the authority of the clock. The need to rebel and deny the rules is shown by keeping others waiting, or by simply ignoring any schedule other than his own. Ask him what he thinks is responsible for his always being late. It's possible that if others are as protective of his feelings as you, he may not even be aware of his habit.

Ali and Inoki 'in action1 during '76 bout Actor Lee Marvin testified Thursday in Los Angeles, he did not love the singer-dancer he lived with for six years although he told her so and wrote a letter saying "believe sweetheart, there ain't anything comes near to you in my life." The 54-year-old Oscar winner said he thought of Michele Triola as "good fun" and "very enjoyable." Marvin said he told her constantly during their romantic relationship that he would never marry again although the year after they broke up he wed his childhood sweetheart. Marvin began testi Charles Goren on bridge ing your contract and going down. North-South bid well to reach a reasonable slam. Once South received spade support, he showed his second suit. North cue-bid his heart control, then affirmed his slam ambitions by jumping over game to five spades.

South needed no further encouragement. West made his natural lead of the jack of hearts, and declarer was quite happy with the dummy that came down. His only problem was in diamonds, and that would be solved if the suit broke evenly. So-declarer won the heart, drew trumps in three rounds and then led the ace of diamonds and another. Unfortunately the suit split 3-1, and East cashed another diamond for down one.

Declarer might have expected a 31 diamond division the most likely distribution according to the probabilities. If he had, he could have exploited the possibility of finding either defender with a singleton diamond honor to improve his chances tor the contract. After winning the king of hearts, declarer should have drawn two rounds of trumps. mony in the suit brought by Miss Marvin, who had her name legally changed in 1970 about the time they parted. The 4G-year-old plaintiff is seeking more than $1 million in tin-landmark breach of contract suit that may affect thousands xf other non-marital arrangements in the U.S.

Flashback on Canada Clashes with Jesuits By Bob Bowman Champlain, De monts, and Poulrincourt founded the first permanent settlement in what is now Canada in 1605. They named it Port Royal now Annapolis Hoyal, Nova Scotia.

In 1606, Poulrincourt was made seigneur of the area and later gave it to his son Biencourt. Poutrincourt was indebted to the Machioness de Guerchevillc for getting royal permission to own Port Royal. She was a powerful lady at the court of King Henry IV and leading supporter of the Jesuits. The Marchioness insisted that Poutrincourt take Jesuit missionaries to Port Royal which he was unwilling to do. He managed to dodge his obligation by sailing from Dieppe while.the Jesuit missionary Father Biard waited for him at Bordeaux.

However, the Marchioness had her way. Biencourt Poutrincourt was due to sail to Port Royal with colonists and supplies and she made sure that Fathers Biard and Masse were included. They sailed from Dieppe on Jan. 26, 1611 and landed at Port Royal in May. They were the first Jesuit missionaries in Canada.

There were often clashes between the fur-traders and the missionaries. On one occasion Poutrincourt told Father Biard: "Father, I know my duty, and I beg you will leave me to do it. with my sword, have hopes of paradise as well as you with your breviary. Show me my path to heaven. I will show you yours on earth." Chief Membertou of the Micmacs and his family were among the first Indians converted to Christianity.

The Chief did very well but objected to "give us this day our daily bread" in the Lord's prayer. He felt that if he asked only for bread he would not get any fish or moose meat. His ordinary diet suited him. He claimed to bemore than 100 years old and to have met Jacques Cartier when he explored the St. Lawrence in 1534.

Others events Jan. 26: 1657: Viscount d'Argenson became Governor of then cashed the ace of hearts and king of clubs. Declarer enters his hand with a third trump and clears the clubs, discarding three diamonds from dummy. The scene is set. Now declarer leads a low diamond! As the cards lie.

West wins the king and is forced to return a heart, which presents declarer with a ruff and stuff and allows him to get rid of his other diamond loser. Notice that it is not necessary to find West with a singleton king for this play to succeed. singleton honor in either defensive hand will do the job, for if that defender is allowed to win the first diamond trick, he must concede a ruff-sluff. The only time declarer will be faced with a problem is if East can overtake West's honor and continue the suit. In this case, declarer will have to guess whether to rise with the ace in the hope diamond are 2-2, or finesse East for the missing honor.

JST Willie Mays says he's shocked that he'd make such a statement, but he isn't about to retract it he still thinks he's the finest baseball player he ever saw. That's the Say-Hey Kid's reaction to his own reaction on being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. But, says he of his boast, at the Boston baseball writers' dinner, "That's not like me I was giving my honest opinion. It doesn't sound too good though." Humility thus honored, he named Roberto Clemente and Cesar Cedeno as runners-up for his title. QUOTE OF THE DAY: Bob Hope, on being told in New York he's been elected for a Teen-Age Award by readers of Seventeen magazine, beating out John Travolta, Robert Redford and Burt Reynolds: "It's a triumph for prune juice and Geritol.

I haven't read Seventeen for years, but I'll read it this month. I may even have wallpaper made out of it." Now you know The most sought-after and highly-paid of college graduates last year were petroleum engineers, with first job salaries averaging $1,653 per month to those with bachelor's Deaths London Robertson 'Bunny' Hare, 87, noted British comedy actor, Thur-day. Ann Landers Tired, angry waitress Dear Ann Landers: I'll bet a lot of secretaries are mad at you because you didn't side with the nine-to-fivers.

I'm a waitress who didn't like your answer to the sales clerk who resented spending time with people who were "just looking." Let me fill you in on a few facts. I stand on my feet from five to 10 hours a day and try to attend school two nights a week. Waitresses are the lowest paid workers there are. Nothing is more upsetting than working like a dog all day and then, five minutes before closing time, some jerk comes in and asks, "Are you still serving?" According to you, I'm supposed to keep smiling and give him great service even though his order will keep me standing up for another 20 to 30 minutes. Stop shaking your head, Ann, the rocks are falling out.

Mad As A Hatter In Tarrytown Dear Mad: Better rocks than nothing which seems to be your problem. Waitresses work hard very hard and they take a lot of guff, too. But if I had no special skills and wanted to make as much money as possible, I'd be a waitress. Granted, the salary isn't great, but an energetic waitress who is competent, cheerful, and gives first class service, even when people come in at closing time, will clean up in tips, and that's the name of the game, honey. Dear Ann: What is your opinion of well-to-do, socially prominlent people who entertain frequently In their magnificent home and never serve alcoholic beverages to their guests? When I say guests, I mean respectable citizens who do not get falling-down drunk they are people who enjoy a cocktail before dinner, have one at home almost every evening and behave like ladies and gentlemen.

Certainly you will agree that a highball or two can be a social lubricant and it is not a sin. Please answer in the paper because there must be other couples around the country who do this same stupid thing and they should all get the word from Ann Landers. Thirsty in Vicksburg Dear Thirsty: the "word" from Ann Landers will give yoU precious little aid and comfort. If a couple prefers not to serve alcoholic beverages in their home, I see no reason for criticism. Are you aware that some religions do not sanction the use of alcohol? Most parties last too long.

It's amazing how much sooner the guests go home when no booze is served. Dear Ann Landers: When my wife and I married she had a diamond-studded wedding ring given to her by her former husband. I gave her a simple band of gold to replace it. Recently she decided all those diamonds should not "go to waste," so she had her former husband's ring made over. The ring, I gave her is In her jewelry box.

I still wear the ring she gave me. I feel hurt. Am I too sensitive? Beamont, Tex. Dear Beaumont: If your wife didn't want to waste "all those diamonds" she could have had a dinner ring made for her right hand. She may not realise It, but she's wearing her ex-husband's jewelry on the finger that should be reserved for you.

IJuestinns favored arc of wide interest or significance or draw ultentinn to injustices neglect or indifference. I am a great Sherlock Holmes fan and I want to know if he really existed and if the stories are true. Holmes and his adventures are both the products of the fertile imagination of his author, Arthur Conan Doyle. There is a big revival of interest in the detective, too. Was Rhoda really married to the guy ho played Joe on the series? Valerie Harper played Rhoda and David Groh was Joe.

They were not married in real life. David is single. Valerie was recently divorced from actor Richard Schaal. Now that Andrew Stevens is married to Kate Jackson, I would like to see him again in The Bastard. Is there any chance the show will be rerun? It will probably be rerun some time.

But good news for young Stevens' fans is the fact that he is just beginning work in the sequel to The Bastard. This one is called The Rebels and will be released as a prime time television movie as was the previous one. Wasn't there once a TV show called The Funny Side? I remember the title but not the show. Good memory. Gene Kelly hosted the show, which lasted two months on NBC in 1971.

It was about five couples. Among the cast: Cindy Williams, John Amos, Teresa Graves and the comedy team of Dick Clair and Jenna McMahon, who have most recently been writing for Carol Burnett and winning Emmies. Where can I write Monty Hall and does he have any children? Write Monty, who is Canadian at Hatos-Hall Productions, 7833 Sunset Los Angeles, CA. 90046, He has three children. His daughter, Joanna Gleason is on Hello Larry, a second season NBC-TV series.

His son Richard, a newsman, is presently with KIPX in San Francisco. Then he has a 11-year-old daughter, Sharon, who is still a student. I think Mark Hamill in Star Wars and Corvette Summer was in two of the best movies I have ever seen. Can you tell me what his next movie will be? Mark is in The Big Red One, due for summer release and, of course, the sequel to Star Wars, soon to begin filming. My brother and sister say that the actor who played Lorie in Little Women on NBCrTV recently is the same actor who played Richie Brockelman, Private Eye.

I say they are two different people. Please help settle this argument. You are the winner of the dispute. Richard Gilliland, who was in Operation Petticoat last season, appeared in Little Women. Dennis Dugan is the name of the actor playing Richie.

I heard that Robert Conrad has five children. Why is he referred to as single? Bob does have five children. From his first marriage, he has Nancy, who is an actress and was in Black Sheep Squadron with him; Joan, who is his secretary and a son. He has two younger children from a second marriage. Bob is always very quiet about his private life, so people at the studio aren't sure whether or not he is married at this moment.

He'll next be seen in a pilot film he has just com pleted called The Duke. i I What happened to actor Mark Wheeler who was in Mobile One. Is it true he is married to the woman who played the mother on Apple's Way. He never looked half as old as she. Mark, who is older than he looks, recently played a high school rock star in Ron Howard's Cotton Candy.

And yes, he is married to Frances Lee McCain, who played the mother on Apple's Way. She is younger than she looks. I have a dispute with a friend. He says the late Audie Murphy played Billy the Kid opposite Jane Russell in the Howard Hughes' movie, The Outlaw. I say no, but I don't know who did.

The forgotton man of that film was Jack Beutel. Information ni'trn rccuslrl BIRTH CERTIFICATE INQUIRIES: Ontario Ragtatrar General. Mjcdonald Slock. Bay and Walloeloy. Toronto.
