Dear Ann lenders: How much validity do you attach lo (he newspaper and magazine polls? I am especially interested in the polls which list- "the most admired." Too Much Mystery Dear Mystery: The newspaper polls of "Ihe mosl admired" should be called "Ihe list of who's whose names are most recognizable." I agree, some of Ihe results don't make much sense.

For example: In a recent poll, Kichard Nixon and the Pope tied for seventh place. with this. A concept that is very injurious to males, it prevents them from asking for help when they need it. Statistics show that males make 25 percent fewer visits to doctors and dentists than females. As a result, when men do become ill it's more serious and their hospital stays average 15 percent longer.

Once again, this is part of the myth that traps men and makes them victims. Violent action is just what we don't need today. I. This is one of the reasons so many males become seriously ill when they retire. A sense of worth and of self shouldn't come solely through work.

Men have to learn lo become self-aviare and more conscious of their feelings and emotional needs. They have to learn to know themselves separate and apart from work. 5. B.

A strong distaste for homosexuals may indicate fear of homosexual inclinations. When it's obsessive, fear of homosexuality acts as a barrier in establishing close male friendships. 7. FALSE. Most liberated males support the Women's movement and the Equal Rights Amendment.

They feel both sexes have been trapped by rigid sex roles and both need to be liberated. 8. FALSE. Many men do want to father children for this reason, but it Is a family. This kind of thinking inevitably leads to problems and disappointments.

If a man has children primarily to prove his masculinity, his children will ffer. Testin The rlnh Is often iisprt hs the testing ground for new conventions. A club has the right to permit players to test new Ides that are not officially approved by the ACBL for tournament play, subject only to the condition that a bid must serve a constructive purpose I.e. a bid whose only purpose is to disrupt the opponent's biding system cannot be permitted. Anyone wishing to try out a new Idea should ask the club director in advance some clubs in Ottawa permit experimentation with new ideas, others limit conventions lo ACBL approved ones only.

One other important point concerning new conventions should be mentioned here even if permission is granted to play a new convention in a club, only ACBL authorized conventions are permitted, at Sectional and Karpov PROBLEM: White to play and win. See solution at end of column. Anatoly Karpov was named by the Soviet Federation of Sports Journalists as "Sportsman of the Year" for I97X. Karpov also won that distinction in 1977. Karpov's claim to fame was defeating Viktor Korchnoi in the World-Championship match this fall.

Karpov probably gained extra points in the competition because Korchnoi defected from the Soviet I'nion; his defeat, in Soviet way of looking at things, is therefore a greater victory for Communism. Among the top ten sportsmen of the year was 17-year-old Maia Chiburdanidze, who won the Women's World Championship this summer. Her opponent, Nona Oaprindashvili, is a good Soviet citizen; otherwise Maia might have placed higher. Karpov was later welcomed to the order of Ihe Working Red Banner for his sporting achievement. In Canada, journalists wouldn't even consider chess a sport, much less nominate a chess player as sportsman of Ihe year! My nomination for chess player of the year for Canada is Jean llebert of Quebec.

Although ranked near the bottom of the tournament. Jean won the Canadian Closed Championship (his summer. Another major Canadian tournament has just recently been won by a French Canadian. Sylvain Rarbeau of Montreal won the Nth Canadian Junior Championship in Calgary. Of course it might depend on the definition of "statesman." Bob Edwards, publisher of the Calgary Eye-Opener, defined a statesman as "a dead politician and there should be more of them." When Howe was Premier of Nova Scotia In 1861, he moved a resolution in the legislature that efforts should be made to Unite the British North American colonics, which were Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. The resolution was passed by the legislature, but Howe did nothing more to Implement It, Two years later Howe got out of politics and became fisheries commissioner for the British government.

In 1864, Premier Tupper of Nova Scotia Invited Howe to be the original plans for Confederation, but Howe.decllned the Invitation. He could also have attended the Quebec conference later In the year, but did not make any effort to be there. It was on January 13, 1865, that Howe revealed his true colors. Lambert of Ottawa in 1881. Chess has always been popular in Quebec. Why did it take the French Canadians so long? I think the main problem was that chess tournaments in Quebec were long the domain of the F.nglish-speaking people. It was only about 10 years ago that French-speakers started organizing their own tournaments, bigger and bettor than those anywhere else in Canada. Today the effort is paying off.

French Canadians hold three of the our national titles Barbeau also holds the Canadian High School Championship. Instead, he proposed that British North American colonics should have seats in the British parliament and that colonials should also be allowed to serve in the British civil service. There Is a story that he was asked by a friend why he had turned his back on Confederation and he Is said to have replied in effect "If you had got together a circus, how would you like it if that fellow Tupper came and stood by the door and collected the shillings?" In 1869, Howe did another turnabout: he Joined Prime Minister Macdonald's government as Secretary of State. His old Liberal friends would not be seen on the same side of the street, with him.

You may wish to discuss Ihe matter by telephoning there because of time a Can you tell me what to do with rusty stovepipes which we want lo clean up and protect from further rusting? We intend to use them in a sugar shack so they will only be used for a short time of the year. This is a difficult question you have posed because it may be much safer and less costly to replace the stovepipe rather than to try to clean It up. A brush might be used to cleun away some of the outer rust (it would be impossible to do the interior of the pipes) before using an anli-rust inhibitor (phosphoric-acid type for steel) and a stove black available at many hardware stores. Sunar shacks with their wide variances in temperature and high condensation are troublesome spots in which to protect metals. On television the other morning we saw some pictures by a Canadian artist from a collection opening within a few days at the National Gallery.

We did not hear the name of the artist. Can you identify him? A collection of Ihe work of George Heriot's water-colours and prints will be on display from Jan. 19 until March I. The artist was one of the most respected military artists in born lo an old and illustrious Scottish family. The collection of some 140 items was brought together by the Agnes Elheruigton Art Centre in Kingston.

From Ottawa, the collection will move on to McCord Museum, Montreal, the Art Gallery of Windsor, and the Royal Ontario Museum in the spring and early summer. Amongst my souvenirs I have found a silver spoon on which the words G'rebbc, Rhenonhave been inscribed. I believe that is in the Netherlands but I have been unable to find reference to it. On this spoon there also appears the symbol of a soldier's tin hat and gun. Can you tell me if there may have been a battle at that location in one of the wars? Many soldiers lost Iheir lives in a bitter battle at Grebbe Berg early in the Second World War in the Netherlands.

The Grebbe Line was a most important defence line against Germany's invading troops in Holland in May, The area is located near Ihe border of the provinces of Gelderland and Utrecht. Your spoon, without doubt, marked that period in the early days and could be quite valuable to collectors of such wartime memorabilia. We would like to travel to the Canadian Kast Coast in the summer months and would like our travels to coincide with one of the Scottish celebrations there. Can you suggest a time for us to go?
