According to sales data issued by tracking firm Nielsen SoundScan, West's Graduation sold 957,000 copies during the six days ended Sept. 16, while 50 Cent's Curtis trailed with 691,000. West also bested 50 Cent in the UK. West's tally is the largest for any album since 50 Cent's previous release The Massacre, which opened to million units in March 2005 and spent six weeks at No.

1. It surpasses the bow of West's previous album, Late Registration, which spent two weeks at No. 1 in 2005. Based on first-day sales, pundits had expected West's latest album to sell more than 750,000 copies for the week. The rivalry between the rappers which both said was more of a marketing invention than a reality rekindled faded memories of a time when excited music fans would swamp record stores to snap up new albums.

The music industry has been in a tailspin for the better part of a decade, ravaged by piracy, and it's rare for albums to debut with such hefty numbers. For several weeks this year, the top seller sold less than 100,000 copies. Overall album sales so far this year are off about 15 per cent from the year-ago period, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "I am very excited to have participated in one of the biggest album release weeks in the last two years," said 50 Cent. "Collectively, we have sold hundreds of thousands of units in our debut week.

This marks a great moment for hip-hop music." I soMemee hunt tfi OS Herald Archive, Getty Images Rihanna performs at the MTV Music Awards. Upbeat urban performers from three beach nations showed up to keep summer alive at Vibefest 2007 in Calgary, making for what could have been one of the best Vibefests in that event's short history. twentysomethings Attendance bottle-necked onto 4,000. Olympic Way. Were they heading to the Saddledome for Keith Urban, or to the Corral for Akon, Rihanna and Kardinal Offishall? The solution seemed to be that pointy shoes walked up to the 'Dome, and sneakers snuck to the Corral. Screams reverberated throughout the Corral from the minute many of the mostly teen, mostly female demographic entered the arena, waving glowsticks, flapping recently purchased T-shirts. Kicking things off was Jamaican-born, Toronto-bred Kardinal Offishall, seemingly a mainstay at Vibefest.

He had a solid, crowd-rocking set that included a danceable version of Graveyard Shift Barbados-born Rihanna scared us at first with what looked like a poor attempt to mask lip-syncing on opener Pon De Replay, but really, considering she wagged her bum with such enthusiasm and magnetism, it was soon for-gottea Decked out in black pleather thigh-high boots, the leggy chanteuse went on to a great show, highlighted by upbeat, infectious versions of We Ride, S.O.S., Shut up and Drive, and Um-ber-ell-a, the three-syllable word that's now four syllables. Looking gorgeous all night, she also tackled a pretty decent version of Rehab (though her backup singers seemed to be carrying most of the tune), and a cover of Bob Marley's Is This Love? It was almost surprising Rihanna wasn't headlining this show, but the Senegalese Akon did anything but let up the momentum. The singer was great from the start, led up by hype man Benny a kilt-wearing, mohawk-sporting DJ who spun 15-second samples of the hottest Top-40 beats to introduce the singer. Keeping the crowd bopping along to Shake Down, Sole Survivor, Ghetto and Smack That, Akon brought back the same great live show he did with Gwen Stefani back in June, peeling off one layer after the other to the delight of the many screaming girls. Showing that there was no end to entertainment in Calgary on Tuesday night, DJs for both Keith Urban and Akon were heading to different downtown clubs to spin sets.
