80 A flashy, organ(ized) show 'ap Dance If I By HUGH WTATT In other words, he dispelled the myth that the organ is an instrument exclusively for the church, concert hall and cocktail lounge. Most of Smith's selections Tuesday night were tunes he first performed back in the late '50s and J- "The Tap Dance Kid," which is being forced out of the Broadhurst Theater to make room for Dustin Hoffman in "Death of A Salesman," will re-open March 27 at the larger Minskoff Theater, it was announced yesterday. The decision to keep the show open at a different theater was made because the play's weekly box office gross, which started weak, was up considerably in February and last week. "We're doing great business now," said Harvey Klaris, one of the show's producers. "And we expect to do even better at the Minskoff, which is ideal for musicals." This Sunday's 3 P.M.

matinee will be the last performance at the Broadhurst Bruce Chadwick '60s, like "The Sermon," a down-home blues hit he originally recorded with such artists as the late trumpeter Lee Morgan. Still, others were standards like "Laura," "It's All Right With Me" and "My Romance." There were some minor distractions during the beginning of the first set The club had provided him with its own rented Hammond B-3 organ, which took him a while to get used to. The problem, however, The organist Jimmy Smith is a show-off. He is a crowd pleaser; a strong funky blues player who knows how to work a room. When the crowd's attention begins to drift, he moves his body sensually, unleashing an explosion of sanctified rhythms and earthy phrases from his instrument that recall a Baptist preacher at work.

He can also turn a funny vocal phrase during his infrequent exchanges with the audience. But Smith is also a- musician of extraordinary technique, capable of performing complex, constantly shifting rhythmic and harmonic patterns with graceful runs and arpeggios reminiscent of virtuoso pianists. Additionally, he has a lightness of touch, stimulating even the most mundane of melody lines. SO IT WAS Tuesday during Smith's opening at Fat Tuesdays, Third Ave. and 17th St, where he, guitarist Phil Upchurch and drummer Michael Baker will be in residence through Sunday.

Smith jolted the jazz world during the late '50s when he demonstrated that the organ can be used as a serious, inventive instrument with the same improvisatory apparatus as other instruments unique to Jimmy Smith brooding minor tune played in a waltzy 68 meter, he suddenly began to play the song with such authority and poignancy that the rented organ appeared to be an old companion. Jimmy Smith is flashy, to be sure, but he does it with style. didn't interfere with his overall performance, which was first-rate. For instance, while Smith was apparently feeling his way about on Thad Jones' "A Child is Born," a 3 i i i i Jim Sergeant Major Zack Carey believed in Truth, Justice and the American until a small-town sheriff set him up, and threw his only son in jail for a crime he didn't commit. Now, Sergeant Major Zack Carey is going to try something a little different! "ri fo if jA ffiTH'.
