at 475-8592. THE FLIGHT OF THE Jefferson Airplane is one of the strangest in rock 'n' roll history, and no small part of that flight plan (or non-plan) was Hot Tuna, an offshoot begun in 1968 as a modest musical outlet for bass player Jack Casady and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen. The pair often played softer material than the AirplaneStarship. Acoustic, even, sometimes. They played together more or less continuously for 10 years, splitting up in 1978 and only getting together once since then.

Until now. They're back together on a six-city tour which takes them to the Beacon this coming Saturday, playing what's billed as their first acoustic concert in 11 years. What helped spark this renewed public interest was a pair of albums, "Hot Tuna Splashdown" and "Historic Hot Tuna," recently released by Brooklyn's Relix label. Both the boys look a bit different than in their '60s San Francisco days. Casady was sort of the quintessential hippie-looking character then, with the long blonde hair and round wire-rims.

He was also considered one of the handful of best bass players of his generation. When he's not tooling with Tuna these days, he's playing with Kantner-Balin-Casady, a reunion among three original Airplane riders. Kaukonen, meanwhile, has been pursuing a solo career; his most recent album is "Too Hot To Handle." Look for a good deal of classic Tuna at this show.
