LEADER, Wednesday, February 28, 1990 Have You Heard Areline Smee Areline Smee PAINTINGS ON DISPLAY Oil paintings of former Oakdale resident Areline Smee, now of Modesto, will be on display in the lobby of Sacramento Savings and Loan Association begining March 1. Smee, who also displays her work with the Central California Art League, has been painting in oils for 20 years. She enjoys painting landscapes, seascapes, animals and birds. She has studied painting at Modesto Junior College with Isabel Barnett and also at Columbia Junior College. Now retired, Smee worked for 13 years at the office in Oakdale and later for Baird Photo Service in Modesto.

A CORNUCOPIA OF SOUTH-OF-THE-BORDER FOODS Members of the Migrant Education Parents' Club gathered their culinary talents at a Quermess held Feb. 24 in the St. Mary's Catholic Church parking lot. During the food fiesta, the air was filled with the delicious aromas of pozole, tacos, enchiladas, tamales and many of the Mexican foods. Proceeds from the event benefited Migrant Education programs in the community.

In a recent drawing held by the Migrant Eductaion Program, the first place prize of a trip for two to Puerto Vallarta was won by Oakdale's Mike Keefe, who in turn donated to value of the prize back to the Migrant Education Program. OVDH EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH Cesar Nava, LVN, an employee of Oak Valley Care Center, a division of Oak Valley District Hospital, was honored as Employee of the Month. Nava, a seven-month employee of the Care Center, was chosen by the residents themselves. He is described as very well liked by residents and fellow employees and "excellent with residents and their families." Yosemite, Oakdale Gifts, Inc. 847-1719 Obituaries Margarete E. Lilly Mass of Christian Burial was held Feb. 27 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oakdale for Margarete Elizabeth Lilly, 68, of Oakdale, who passed away Feb.

23. Burial followed at Lakewood Memorial Park. Oakdale Memorial Chapel was in charge of the arrangements. Born in Iowa, Mrs. Lilly moved to Oakdale in 1952 with her husband, Ben, and their two sons.

While in Oakdale, she helped raise four more children, two of whom still live and work in Oakdale. In 1965, at the age of 44, Mrs. Lilly embarked on a new career when the Hershey Plant opened up. She worked there for 21 years. She was also an active memebr of St.

Mary's Catholic Church and the Young Ladies Institute. She is survived by her husband, Bernard Lilly of Oakdale; her children, Guy Lilly and Bruce Lilly, both of Oakdale, Bernard Lilly Jr. of Los Altos, Warren Lilly of Los Osos, Lilly of Manteca and Marcia Allard of Salinas; her brothers, Earl Sauter of El Monte, Lawrence Sauter of Long Beach, Herb Sauter of Iowa and Walter Sauter of Seal Beach and 13 grandchildren. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, Oakdale Branch, P.O. Box 20, Oakdale, 95361 or Guide Dogs for the Blind, 350 Los Ranchitos Road, San Rafael, 94903.

Lester L. Smith Memorial services were held Feb. 24 at the Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel for Lester LeRoy Smith, 78, of Modesto, who died Feb. 20. A native of Antioch, Mr.

Smith resided in Oakdale from 1917 to 1938. He was a 22-year resident of Modesto; a selfemployed plumber and contractor for 40 years and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Smith was a member of the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union Local 444, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7637 of Hayward and the Capt.

Bill Ewing Post of Oakland. He is survived by his brother, William H. Smith of Oakdale, two nieces and one nephew. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the donor's favorite charity. Eugene F.

Leoni Funeral services were held Feb. 23 at the Oakdale Memorial Chapel for Eugene F. Leoni, 77, of Oakdale, who died Feb. 19. Burial was at Lakewood Memorial Park.

A native of California, Mr. Leoni had resided in Oakdale for 15 years. He was retired, having been a bartender in Oakland. He was a member of the Bartenders Union. Police Beat SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 18 2:40 a.m.-- A man was arrested for drunken driving at E.

Street and S. Sixth Avenue. 3:23 a.m. A 40-year-old man was arrested for drunken driving at Highway 120 and Stearns Road. His passenger was arrested for public drunkenness.

9:11 a.m. A 21-year-old man was arrested on a sheriff's warrant and for a violation related to an illegal substance at Frank's Market. 12:33 p.m. An accident involving a vehicle and a child was reported at Street and Wood Avenue. A 19-year-old man was cited and released.

2:53 p.m. --Coast to Coast reported theft of money and a fishing license from the store. 4:19 p.m. A minor injury-accident was reported at Late Classifieds BEAUTY SALON stations, chairs, mirrors, receptionist desks. 847-8353.

Hubbs Private memorial services will be held for Virgil Carr Hubbs, 51, of Avery, who died Feb. 19 in Modesto. Oakdale Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. A native of Oakdale, he had lived in Avery for 14 years. He was a carpenter for two years at Stevenot Winery.

Mr. Hubbs is survived by his son, David Hubbs of Hathaway Pines; his brother, Phillip Hubbs of Hathaway Pines; his sister, Roxanne Hubbs of Oakdale and his mother, La Vaughn Hubbs of Oakdale. Ellamai V. Murphy Burial will be held at the Garaden Hill Cemetery in Oplike, Alabama for Ellamai Vivian Murphy, 81, of Oakdale, who died Feb. 22.

Oakdale Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements to Alabama. Born in Tennessee, Mrs. Murphy lived in Oakdale for years. She was a retired nurse, having worked for the State of Alabama for 38 years. She is survived by her daughter, Vivyn Murphy of Trinidad.

PROMOTIONAL DRAWING Oakdale's Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy, in cooperation with Medicine Shoppe Pharmacies nationwide, held a promotional drawing recently. The local winner, Carol Ann Williams of Oakdale, won a dinner for two at the Nutcracker Restaurant and some Medicine Shoppe sweatshirts.

She now becomes eligible to be placed in the national drawing for a seven-day cruise for two to the Caribbean or $5,000 in cash. ANNUAL AG LUNCHEON The Oakdale Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Ag Luncheon on Friday, March 9, at 11:30 a.m. in the Bianchi Community Center. Speaker for the luncheon will be Len Richardson, editor of the California Farmer Magazine. Reservations are a must.

LOCAL STUDENT HONORED Janay Copland of Oakdale was named to the Dean's List at Biola University for the 1989 fall semester. A student must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or above to qualify. A 1986 graduate of Ripon Christian High School, Copland is now a senior ar Biola University in La Mirada.

She is the daughter of Jack and Sharon Copland of Oakdale. A one-year member of the University Singers, Copland is majoring in liberal education. Founded in Los Angeles in 1908, Biola University is composed of the School of Arts and Sciences, Rosemead School of Psychology, Talbot School of Theology and the School of Intercultural Studies. SHEEP FIELD DAY The California Hampshire Sheep Breeders Association recently sponsored a sheep field day for young people held at Fresno State. The two-day event included workshops, seminars, livestock judging, showmanship and breeding sheep competition.

Champion Hampshire yearling ram was won by Cindy Nimphius of Oakdale. Paul Freitas of Oakdale exhibited the reserve champion yearling ram. In yearling ewe competition, Paul Freitas took a first and second place as did Cindy Nimphius, who also took first pair of yearling ewes, first in yearling flock, second in best pair and reserve champion yearling ewe. Freitas had second in pair of yearling ewes, second in yearling flock and first in best pair. His yearling ewe was selected champion ewe.

In sheep showmanship, Cindy Nimphius won the intermediate competition. In advanced showmanship, Freitas was second; Keri Nimphius, third and Amy Heltzel of Oakdale, eighth. Socoro M. Navarro Rosary will be recited tonight, Wednesday, at 8 p.m. at the Oakdale Memorial Chapel for Socoro Moreno Navarro, 61, of Oakdale, who died Feb.

24. Mass of Christian Burial will be ssaid at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on March 1 with burial following at Oakdale Citizens Cemetery. A native of California, Mrs.

Navarro had lived in Oakdale her entire life. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, Guillermo Navarro of Oakdale; her children, Bill Navarro of Ceres, Josie Michel of Riverbank, Rick Navarro fo Los Angeles, David Navarro and Aurora Rodriguez, both of Oakdale; her brothers, Louie Burgarin of Modesto, Fred Fernandez of Modesto, Juan Fernandez of Oakdale and Lenord Bugarin of Nevada; her sisters, Ruby Cassidy and Catherine Bugarin, both of Riverbank, Eva Valverde of Oakdale and Florence Fernandez of Modesto; her mother, Concha Fernandez of Modesto and nine grandchildren. A man reported his son and a neighbor boy sniffing gas. 5:53 p.m. A woman in the 400 block of N. First Avenue reported a dog ran out from a porch in the 200 block of Street and bit her backside. On police arrival, the dog charged the officers.

8:40 p.m. A 73-year-old woman was taken to a counseling facility after she was reported running circles around trucks at Gilbert's and then into traffic. 9:27 p.m. Jack-in-the-Box reported two males and two females stole two wooden chairs from the restaurant. 9:58 p.m.
