In an election seen by many as a referendum on Premier Ed Stelmach's leadership, voters in the southwest constituency heeded Alliance candidate Paul Hinman's advice to "send Ed a message" relegating the Tories to a third-place finish and delivering a humbling blow to the government in the process. With all 66 polls reporting, Hinman captured 37 per cent of ballots cast (4,052 votes), a 276-vote win over Liberal hopeful Avalon Roberts, who had garnered 34 per cent of the vote. Conservative candidate Diane Colley-Urquhart, a longtime Calgary alderman, finished in third place with 26 per cent of the popular vote, a result few observers saw coming.

"Isn't it great to do the impossible," Hinman, 50, said Monday at his campaign headquarters. As the Alliance party's outgoing leader, Hinman said the result of the byelection should certainly send Stelmach a message while giving his party credibility with one elected MLA. "He's going to have a hard time putting out this fire," Hinman said of the premier. "It's a great boost. People are going to be looking at us now." Both Colley-Urquhart and Roberts conceded to Hinman late Monday.
