THE IOLA REGISTER. THURSDAY. MARCH 9. 1978 PAGEJ1 Citizens also skittish ANSWERS FROM ANN: Test for parents Wichita police believe strangler decreased in recent weeks, he added, because of the heightened awareness of citizens and beefed-up patrols by police. Little is known of the BTK Strangler other than the three letters he has mailed to Wichita news organizations the first in October 1974 in which he claimed credit for killing Tour members of the Joseph Otero family in their home.

In his most recent letter, received at a Wichita television station Feb. 10, the BTK Strangler claimed responsibility for three more slayings. He named two of his victims and challenged police to determine the identity of the third. After probing the cases of 18 unsolved murders in the city since 1970, detectives narrowed the possibilities to three and say they are leaning toward Kathryn Bright as BTKs un- i WICHITA, Kan. (AP) He calls himself the BTK Strangler, because he binds, tortures and kills his vic-tims.

He tells police a monster in his I head plays a big complicated game of putting victims down, follow them, checking upon them, waiting in t- the dark, waiting, waiting. Homicide detectives, engaged in f. one of the most intensive in-t vestigations in police department 1 history, believe his claim to have 1 killed seven persons since 1974 and regard as deadly serious his threat to i strike again. 5 Many residents of this city of 270,000 believe him, too. Wichita is not a city in panic, but feelings of concern and apprehension are strong.

Sales of handguns and locking devices have been brisk. I think theres an awareness, said Police Chief Richard LaMunyon, Barney Google and Snuff) Beetle Bailey THE PAINTERS CAN'T WORK ON yOUR OFFICE TODAY, SIR PARN THAT SOI NS TO BE 6000 EXCUSE TO PLAY GOLF! Dear F. S. Cross talk is always dangerous especially when dealing with lovers. If the man is planning to drop your friend, shell get the message soon enough.

Stay out of it Dear Ann Landers I know you dont smoke and appreciate the many columns you have had against the filthy habit. Maybe you can set me straight on something. People have been using tobacco for centuries. How come it took until now for people in high places to get with it and crack down? I refer to the Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, Mr Joseph Califano who has mounted a nationwide campaign against smoking. Some of my friends think hes gone too far, but I am DEE-Lighted Dear Dee: Secretary Califano is not the first person in a high place to speak out against smoking In 1604 King James described smoking as "loathsome to the eye, hateful to the nose, harmful to the brain and dangerous to the lungs." I dont know what cigarets cost in 1604, but I would like to add to King James description and hard on the budget.

Fifty years ago March 9, 1928 No formal plans have been made for welcoming Billy Sunday to Iola tomorrow afternoon when he arrives at 5:58 from Kansas City on the Santa Fe. The high school band will be out to greet the well known evangelist and probably all of the ministers and committeemen for the revival meeting will be present when he arrives. Neosho Valley: Mrs.

Ella Baxle and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lloyd Baxley, attended the cooking school in Iola and the latter procured a prize as a reward of knowledge along with some of the culinary lines that were under consideration. Carlyle: Spring has come! The robins and the gardeners are busy around Carlyle by Fred Lasswell by Mort Walker by Stan Lee and John Romita WAS A named victim. She was stabbed to death in her home in April 1974, three months after the Otero slayings. The strangler took credit in his most recent letter for the strangulation deaths of Shirley Vian, 26, in March 1977 and Nancy Jo Fox, 25, in December 1977.

Since that letter, however, police have had little to work on. An initial flood of calls from citizens on a specially installed BTK Strangler Hotline has turned into a trickle. The case has had little or no mention in the local newspaper and broadcast stations in recent days. Theres just nothing new to report," LaMunyon said. Weve not isolated it in terms of any specific individual.

Were still running down reports. But we havent found any other bodies, so thats a plus. Detectives have created a file on every name mentioned as a possible suspect. That list totals well over 100 names, LaMunyon said Were to the point now that its probably to our advantage to allow us to catch up, he said. Weve created files on every possible person we can come up with.

Some can be eliminated (as suspects) rapidly, others take a lot of legwork. Two men have confessed to being the BTK Strangler, the same two individuals who confessed in 1974 to the Otero slayings. But LaMunyon called them chronic confessors and said their stories were found to be false. Police have enlisted the assistance of Wichita psychologists and psychiatrists to study BTKs letters and other evidence to develop a profile of the killer that might help lead to his identity. Their findings are being kept confidential.

Dr. George Dyck, head of psychiatry at the Wichita branch of the University of Kansas school of medicine, describes the BTK Strangler as a psychotic individual with a kind of a sense of grandiosity daring people to catch him and probably, in one sense, half wanting to get caught but being excited by the chase. The BTK Strangler calls the force that spurs him to kill Factor and compares it to the same force which triggered Jack the Ripper, Son of Sam and Los Angeles Hillside Strangler. In his first letter, the Wichita strangler wrote that when this monster enters my brain, I will never know. But, its here to stay.

He later said, The pressure is great and sometimes he runs the game to his liking. Maybe you can stop him. I cant. He has already chosen his next victim or victims I dont know who they are yet. The next day after I read the paper, I will know, but its too late.

The killer seems to carefully plan his attack, Dyck said, rather than act on impulse, so he wouldnt necessarily seem dangerous to someone else. Another Wichita psychiatrist, who requested anonymity, said the randomness of his victims was one of the most frightening aspects of the case. "What makes this person seem so terrifying, so frightening to people is that they fear they could be the next person chosen, he said. "They dont know whether they are next its this fear of the unknown that makes the terror so personal and so powerful. Reflecting that fear of the unknown, Shawnee Coval, an employee of a downtown lounge, wonders whether she has more cause for concern than others.

All three addresses of the stranglers identified victims contained the number 3, and she has three 3s in her address. Dear Ann Landers: Ive read a lot lately about how ungrateful kids are. I wonder if some of the parents who read your column will see themselves in a little different light after they have answered these questions: When was the last time you spent an hour with your child doing what he wanted? When was the last time you said to your child, You did a great job. Im proud of you! When did you last say, Lets talk about anything you want to talk about. Ill listen and answer all your questions if I can.

When was the last time you said, Im sorry, or I made a mistake. How long has it been since you said, I trust you. I know you have good judgment and will do the right thing. Im a 16-year-old girl and Ive never heard one of these statements from either of my parents. I know more about raising kids right now than they do.

Ill bet there are plenty of teenagers out there who are in the same boat. Not Sour, Just Sad Dear Sad: Thanks for writing. Ill bet this is one column that will be handed to lots of parents who have been pointing out certain letters for their teen-agers to read. So be it. We can all learn from each other.

Dear Ann Landers: A very close friend of mine is involved with a man she is counting on to marry her. The problem is he has informed me that he has no such intentions. The truth of the matter is, he plans to break off with her gradually and then have a relationship with me. I have never led this man to believe I have any interest in him whatsoever, so help me. Now I need to know if I should tell my friend what he has in mind.

If so, how? F. S. in W.I. DOE official lioj es coal allocation will be unnecessary KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) An energy official says the federal government does not plan to force utilities with good coal supplies to share that coal with areas hurt by the coal strike at least for the present.

It (allocation to other areas) is down the road a piece because it is so difficult, Frank Kelly of the U.S. Department of Energy said Tuesday. Missouri and Kansas officials have been worried the DOE will use its power to drain both electricity and coal for utilities in some Eastern states. Kelly said his department has such authority in certain circumstances, but it would not be practical at present. He said his office is most concerned that each state work to equalize the problems of its own coal users, rather than looking to another state for help.

Kelly said coal-handling equipment at different utilities is not always compatible, and utilities use different kinds of boilers that burn different kinds of coal. And life must go on. A survey of a cross-section of the city by the Wichita Eagle and Beacon newspapers found emotions ranged from unconcern to fear, with women expressing more concern for safety than men.

Zoe Mayes, a beauty parlor employee, said many of her customers were talking about the strangler. They make sure that their locks work and theyre cautious about not answering doors to stangers and that sort of thing, she said. Persons are not near as hesitant about reporting suspicious persons, LaMunyon said. Weve checked out a lot of meter readers and insurance salesmen and others like that.
