I've Got My U-68! ft 1 i I By JIM FARBER r-Tf HOSE ADVENTL'R-i 1 ous souls who regular-Li ty flip through the UHF dial on their TVs have been rewarded recently by discovering a new local music video channel. 68 is a seven-days a week, noon to-midnight station that began broadcasting June 1. bringing relief to those boroughs still without their MTV.

V4M (WWMT) broadcasts in stereo from the Empire State Building. (For none-able video addicts on the Island and in southern Connecticut, the station also has a transmitter in Smithtown, over Ch. 67.) Unlike MTV. U48s format is broad. The station doesn't offer just Top 40 and rock oriented clips but also noncrossover urban contemporaryblack music, and (gasp!) even some local small label bands, such as Stereo, a rock band from New Jersey.

"Basically, how we're trying to differentiate ourselves from other music video services is to develop programing that's specifically tailored to New York tastes." says 68 spokesperson Carol Silver. "We're not trying to be a network." Unlike MTV, U-68 offers non-crossover music and local small-label bands, like Stereo (above). record companies to showcase a percentage of preferred videos exclusively for a prescribed period. In general, after four weeks, video shows which run only a few hours can play them, but a station like U-68, which is on Zippy Ricky ominous zeppelins are all used as backdrops to pseudo-live footage. This staginess suits Springfield's slick pop talent just fine.

As a local outlet, they are a "must carry" on cable, but New York systems are fighting this rule, feeling they're already overloaded with stations. Likewise. MTV has filed a petition with the FCC to waive the "must carry" rule and keep U-68 off cable.
