The melodies have been juke box favorites ever since the opening In 1957, and were written by Jule Styne, composer of "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and "Gypsy." The story idea as explaineo by the authors came from the back cover of a New York telephone directory: "Printed thereon was a full-page ad for a telephone answering service, showing a cheery young girl who looked like a benevolent Medusa. From her head there stretched many telephone wires leading to representations of people in all walks of life doctors, executives, house-wives, etc.

In the musical, Patti Karr plays Ella Peterson, of the Susanswerphone Service. She is a warm hearted, helpful sort of person who finds herself mixed up with an actor, a song writing dentist, Dr. Kitchell by name, (played by William Le Massena), and emotionally with a drunken playwright, Jeff Moss (Van Johnson) who finally manages to complete a three -act synopsis in less than four hours. Others in the cast are David Gold as Sandor, head of a bookmaking syndicate, Camilla Crane as Sue, owner of the answering service, William Pierson as Inspector Barnes, and Chele Graham as Gwynne of the telephone service. The July Styne score is sprinkled with a variety of songs: lilting ballads such as "Long Before I Knew You," "I Met A and "Just in a witty patter song, "Drop That Name:" the inventive a Simple Little System," and songs with clever lyrics, such as a Perfect Relationship," "Is It A "The A Dallas produced show, "Bells Are Ringing" is being directed by John Bishop, with John Sharpe as choreographer for the jazzy dance numbers, and John Tedford as music director.

Many fields without protection from growing cover such as small grain or from dead litter cover have been severely damaged by erosion. The saturated conditions of the soil cause runoff with even the smaller rains. Each runoff moves the soil to a new location. This movement of the soil creates a two-fold problem. The area of scour or removal is left gullied or robbed of the best and most fertile soil while this soil moves down the slope to silt our terrace channels, pollute our streams or fill our lakes.

John Wells, Chairman of the Collin Soil and Water Conservation District Board, points out that some of these troubles are made by the farmer himself. "When terraces have not been kept adequately maintained and are allowed to become too small they do not hold the runoff and will break over causing gullying," he stated. "Farm operators who farm across terraces rather than on the contour with their terraces are creating future problems," he added. Technicians of the Soil Conservation Service in checking some fields where row crop farming is across the terraces find that those terraces have only a 4 or 5 inch effective height. They are ineffective in reducing runoff damage.

This immediate damage is not so serious as is the long range effect. These rows draining down the slope deposit silt in the terrace channel thereby creating a benched effect across the field. This makes it increasingly difficult to repair and rebuild a terrace big enough to do an adequate job of protecting the field. SCS is making every effort to lay out parallel systems of terraces to help in the farming operations. This is especially needed where large 6 and 8 row equipment is used in farming.

Waterways are essential to the effectiveness of a terrace system. In many cases they need to be repaired when early stages of rilling occur. Much of the time a simple matter of weed control plus fertilizing will keep these effective for years. Cost sharing assistance is available through the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service to owners and operators who need to treat their land with terraces and waterways. There is no cost sharing, however, for maintaining existing systems.
