This is the first time a physician has served on the board. Thompsons Poultry announces that its operations here will cease Nov. 23. 7 A mobile home owned by Dale Prather was listed as probably a total loss after a fire Saturday night. The first in a series of three programs on the past, present and future of the community will be held tonight at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center.

The meetings are sponsored by the Allen County Committee for the Humanities. 8 Unified School District 257 board members scheduled a meeting for 10 a.m. Thursday for county educators and industrialists to discuss what steps may be taken to provide more vocational education on the secondary level. 10 A pension program for Allen County Hospital employees was authorized last night by the board of trustees along with a wage increase that will average 6.6 percent. 14 Highway projects are scheduled for Allen County during the next two years according to the State Department of Transportation.

Improvements on U.S. 54 from Moran east to the Alien-Bourbon County line are scheduled for next year and a U.S. 160 bypass between Iola and Humboldt is planned for 1979. 15 Sequeria Costa, an internationally acclaimed pianist, will appear at Iolas Bowlus Fine Arts Center Thursday evening. 16 Frank A.

Milne, a veteran Iola businessman, died yesterday at the Country Side Estates Nursing Home. 18 Harold Lundine retires after 32 years with the Postal Service. 21 John Edwards has been elected president of the Iola Area Chamber of Commerce for 1978. 23 Iola area families prepare for traditional turkey dinners as friends and relatives arrive for the Thanksgiving holidays. 26 As temperatures drop, higher gas bills appear and area lumber yards report a bleak picture concerning the supply of insulation.

28 Sergio Campanini has been appointed president of Berg Manufacturing Company of Iola, according to an announcement by Joseph V. Scott, president of Echlin Manufacturing Company which owns Berg. Barbara E. Moore, Route 3, was killed Saturday in a head-on collision a mile south of Iola on U.S. 169.

29 Iola Area Symphony Orchestra is scheduled to present its first concert of the season Thursday. Dale Creitz, who organized the orchestra in 1967, will direct the performance. December 1 Santa Claus will make his first appearance here when he arrives for the Christmas parade Saturday. 2 A large section of reinforced plaster ceiling fell from the balcony of the Iola Junior High School this morning during an awards assembly. Five students were admitted to the hospital for observation and treatment.

5 Iola Junior High School will reopen tomorrow after it has been inspected and found to be structurally sound. 6 Unified School District 257 Board of Education members tentatively agree on an architectural firm to study the updating of the high school facilities. Eight vehicles and the Milne and Mann building on East Madison were extensively damaged this morning when a large slab of pre-cast concrete and a semitrailer flatbed truck crashed into them in a freak accident. 7 Dealers are expecting boat sales to climb to a higher level during 1978 than they reached in 1977, according to Wayne McCollam, IMP Boats manager. 8 The Iola Music Club will present its 24th annual Christmas Vespers at the Wesley United Methodist Church Sunday.

10 Work will be started on a new community building in Shepherd Park and on an addition to the Iola fire station later this month by Sell Constructors, Inc. The buildings will be financed by money made available through community development grants earlier this year and should be completed by June 1, 1978. 12 Efforts are being made by John Chappel, county attorney, to crack down on the problem of bad checks being written in Allen County. 13 Diebolt Lumber Companys main building at LaHarpe was destroyed by fire early today. No cause for the fire has been established.

15 Gary Hawk, who was recently named honorary Governors Artist, received a distinguished service award yesterday from Gov. Robert Bennett. 20 The late Dale "Doc Stiles, who built one of the strongest high school track and field programs in Kansas during a 22-year span beginning in 1955, is being nominated for the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame. in the American Automobile Associations Pedestrian Safety Inventory. 23 Allen County Community Junior College has been notified by the Kansas State Board of Nursing that the college has been approved as a provider of continuing education for nurses.

27 The Allen County commissioners announced yesterday they have received approval of a third local public works grant application. The $23,415 grant is for the construction of a new Historical Society building. 29 Representatives from Wilson and a Salina based architectural firm, met with Unified School District 257 board members last night to discuss the possibility of renovating the high school. The school was well built and renovation would be a possibility, he said. October 1 The 20 employees of the Iola State Bank are the first to pledge 100 percent to this years United Fund drive, according to Paul Hinkson, drive chairman.

3 The Homebuilders Sunday School Class from the First Baptist Church of Humboldt was awarded the grand prize for their float, The Parable of Ten Virgins, at the 20th annual Biblesta held Saturday in Humboldt. 4 Ellen P. Ellis of 626 North Third, died yesterday morning of apparent carbon monoxide asphyxiation from a malfunctioning furnace. Her 16-year-old daughter is being treated at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Members of the Unified School District 257 again met with representatives of an architectural firm last night to discuss construction or renovation of a new high school.

5 The Lutheran churches of Iola, Humboldt and Aliceville plan a barbecue in Piqua to benefit Circle Boys Ranch north of Iola. 7 A $450,000 loan arranged through the Farmers Home Administration will lead to the manufacture of red clay flower pots at the Humboldt Brick and Tile Company plant north of Humboldt. 8 Mrs. John Lust of rural Iola was killed Friday when the car she was driving collided with a Santa Fe train two miles north of Iola. 13 Iola City commissioners sign a lease agreement with a federally funded agency which will result in the remodeling of the old fire barn as a senior citizens center.

The second floor of the building will be removed. Employees of Berg Manufacturing are sent home as a precautionary measure after receiving a rash of complaints from employees of headaches, dizziness and nausea. 14 Berg Manufacturing workers returned to work today after a problem caused by unvented space heaters on the shipping dock was solved. The development of the former Lehigh quarry as a state fishing lake by the Fish and Game Commission seems likely. 17 U.S.

Sen. James B. Pearson confirms today that he would like to teach at the University of Kansas after he retires from public office 15 months from now. 18 Richard Timberlake, manager of the Berg Manufacturing plant here, has been promoted to divisional manager of the Automotive Controls Corporation at Litchfield, 111. The Allen County Community Junior College trustees say they will work with the city, county or anyone else to provide a street across junior college property which will connect with Cottonwood and Kentucky streets.

The Iola High School play, The Warriors Husband, will be staged this week. Porkys Place, a new dine-in or carry-out restaurant, will open Thursday at 313 West street. 20 Allen Countys Farm-City Days celebration will receive national recognition next week when Gov. Robert Bennett awards plaques of recognition to the three sponsoring groups of the event. 21 IMP Boats is operating as usual today following the news that its parent company, APECO, will operate under the protection of Chapter 11 of the Federal Bankruptcy Act.

26 A new warehouse and office building for Quality Packaging Products, are in the planning as expansion plans are beginning to take shape. November 1 Eleven of 12 hopper cars filled filled with Monarch cement derailed and ripped up about 500 feet of Santa Fe Railroad tracks at the east edge of Carlyle shortly after noon yesterday. 3 For the 11th consecutive year the Iola Police Department is awarded the Pedestrian Safety Achievement Award. 4 Three new members lae been appointed to the Board of Trustees of Allen County Hospital and the board has been expanded from five to seven was crossing U.S. 54.

27 Today marks the 25th anniversary of the dedication of the Allen County Hospital. It was on June 27, 1950 when ground was broken for the hospital and on July 27 it was dedicated. 29 Shannon Hardware has been sold to Dan Creitz by Mr. and Mrs. David Shannon as of Aug.

1. The sale brings to a close 80 years of operation of retail businesses in Iola by the Shannon family. August 2 County commissioners voted yesterday to share the $342,000 allocated to Allen County through a Public Works Grant with the nine cities in the county. The money was divided according to the population. 3 A new community building in Shepherd Park and an extension on the west end of the fire station were chosen by Iola City commissioners this morning as the best way to spend the $147,243 the city will receive in federal public works money.

6 Personal Thrift Plan loan company has opened an office at 110 South Washington. Gary Leiker is the office manager. 8 The Allen County Fair started today at the fairgrounds in Shepherd Park. 9 The Humboldt City Commission accepted a plan last night for the use of $50,378.50 the city will receive through a public works grant. A plan was submitted to build a new firehouse.

11 Carolyn Wells has started work as the juvenile probation officer at the Allen County Courthouse. She will handle youths in both Allen and Woodson counties who have been through the courts and are on probation. 16 The county commissioners have decided to use $100,000 of a local public works grant for a building for the Historical Society, an airport administration building, a wheelchair ramp for the courthouse and road and bridge shop buildings in Elsmore, Humboldt and Moran. 17 Mike Sigg took over this week as the new owner of Midwest Auto Stores, 207 S. Jefferson.

Dean Duncan leaves the store after 33 years in the auto parts business. He opened this store in 1952. 19 Workmen began this week putting on the first layer of the new court-house roof. The job will take about three weeks. 24 Today the last day of summer vacation for teachers and students in Unified School District 257.

30 Richard Fleischman, a Cleveland architect, suggested to the school board last night that Iolas high school should be remodeled and a sports complex added. 31 Several Rotary Club members are busy beautifying the courthouse square in preparation for the Farm-City Days activities. September 3 Starting tomorrow, local cartoonist Jim Strahles cartoons will appear in the Kansas City Star Sunday supplement, Star Magazine, on a biweekly basis. Strahles cartoons appear regularly in The Register. John Knorp has changed the name of the Wallgreen Agency drug store on the Iola Plaza to Knorp Drugs.

It had beer, known as Cripps. 7 Unified School District 257 board members adopted a project budget of $76,997.04 for the Thomas H. Bowlus Fine Arts Center last night. 10 Mrs. Bill Brewington won $1,000 in Singer IGAs Bash Sweep-stakes yesterday.

John Lawrence, 608 N. Jefferson, will drive his 1926 Model Ford in the Farm-City Days parade today as will other area residents who have antique cars and trucks. 12 Farm-City Days, Saturday and Sunday, were a success. Mr. and Mrs.

Carl Conger were hosts to the community at their dairy farm Sunday evening. The Prairie Dell 4-H Club was named the winner of the parade theme prize in Saturdays parade. 13 Enrollment has dropped by 50 students this year in Unified School District 258, Humboldt, according to figures released last night at the district board meeting. 16 Enrollment in Unified School District 257 is up by 55 students according to enrollment figures released yesterday. Robert Bennett will be in Iola Tuesday afternoon to officially open the quilt exhibit at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center and attend a public reception. 19 Allen County has received a $6,510 grant for a wheelchair ramp at the county courthouse. 20 Norman Jordan of Savonburg has been nominated to receive the American Farmer Degree, highest degree presented by the National Future Farmers of America organization. 21 Allen County Community Junior College has its largest number of students enrolled in its 54-year history. Total enrollment is 901, but the unduplicated headcount is 837.

22 For the 11th straight year Iola has been named as an award winner 13 Robert Walden will close his furniture and appliance store at 1406 East Street and will use the building for working area in his construction business. 16 A charge of arson is being considered today against Cindy Wells, Humboldt, after she was allegedly involved in a fire Saturday morning that caused an estimated $2,000 damage to the Allen County Jail. 21 Ben Herrington, Register reporter, leaves Iola to make Guthrie, his home. Jean Emmert of Wichita joins the Register staff. 23 Joe Fowler of Moran, a leader in Democrat politics in Allen County, died at his home Friday, May 20.

26 Edward James Miller Jr. and Lisa Jo Specht won awards for academic excellence at the Iola High School graduation ceremonies last night. 27 The Rev. Dr. William J.

Baldwin is the new pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church. June 6 Construction is underway for two new lagoons and new pumping systems at the Iola water plant and the main sewer plant. 7 Vic Perkins, who has been the Iola city clerk for 20 years, has been awarded the designation of Certified Municipal Clerk for achieving the high educational, experience and service requirements established by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks for attainment of the honor. 9 Allen County Hospital reports an operating surplus of $25,736 for the month of May and a year-to-date surplus of $123,189.75. Dan Guckenheimer explained the profitable operation was a result of a consistently larger number of patients than in previous years.

10 The Iola Community Theaters production of Two by Two opens at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center. The whimsical musical is based on the story of Noahs ark. 15 A bid by Midco, of Humboldt has been accepted for the construction of the LaHarpe Grade School. 21 John Masterson, who has been the director of guidance and baseball coach at Allen County Community Junior College, is now employed at Allen County Bank and Trust. 22 Iolas new Kiwanis Club has been officially organized with 25 members.

Ottmar Lang is the clubs president. 24 Andrew A. Armato, D.O., will join Allen County Hospital as the radiologist on Aug. 1. 25 Jere Shue has joined IMP Boats as sales manager.

28 A contract has been signed with Restoration and Waterproofing Company of Wichita for a new roof on the Allen County Courthouse. Richard Fleishman, an architect from Cleveland, Ohio, presented his ideas on school construction and renovation at last nights meeting of Unified School District 257. 29 Plans for a major expansion of the Iola Public Library facilities were unveiled for Iola City commissioners yesterday. The proposed expansion would add 6,000 square feet of floor space to the library at an estimated cost of $200,000. Coast to Coast Stores have signed a long-term lease for a building in the Iola Plaza shopping center.

The store will be adjacent to Cripps Drug Store. July 2 Bernard Claus, an 83-year-old Humboldt man, was killed and his wife Pauline, 74, was critically injured in a traffic accident yesterday afternoon a mile east of Carlyle at a county road intersection. 5 Two men, dressed as women, entered Foodtown Grocery Store Sunday and attempted to take money from the cash register. One made a slight disturbance with a shopping cart while the other opened the cash register. 6 Bill Metcalf, formerly of Clay Center, began his duties yesterday as the new county engineer.

John K. Layle, who sold school supplies to two generations of Iolans, died Tuesday at the age of 78. 7 Fire destroyed a home yesterday afternoon four miles west of Iola. The Jim Shepard family lived in the house which was owned by Carl Conger. 13 Fire raced through the Ups and Downs clothing store, 116 East Jackson, yesterday evening, completely destroying its contents.

Iola City commissioners were told yesterday that water rates will have to be raised significantly to pay for any expansion of the citys water production and distribution facilities. 18 John Harrington, a former Iolan, has been appointed director of SEK-CAPs Head Start operations. He will work out of a Girard office. 20 Gordon Schultz has begun his duties as the assistant superintendent of Unified School District 257. Mrs.

Joe Skubitz, Fifth District Congressman, announces plans to retire after the 1978 election. 23 Fire caused an estimated $75,000 loss to the Jim Weeks farm south of Iola last night.

24 Bill Robison and Ken Hart take on new responsibilities at Gates Rubber Company plant here. Robison is now industrial relations manager and Hart is industrial relations specialist. 25 Because of dry windy weather, Iola Fire Chief Tince Little banned all trash burning inside the city limits today. A rash of fires broke out in the area yesterday. March 1 A weekend snow and warm weather helped, but water is still in short supply for nearby cities not drawing from the Neosho River.

Stern Brothers and Company, a Kansas City agency, is the low bidder for $531,118 in general obligation bonds to build an elementary school in LaHarpe. 2 Allen County commissioners are plagued with an increasingly serious problem: a leaking courthouse roof. 8 Don Bain is the new superintendent of schools for Unified School District 257. The board of education made the announcement last night. District 257 board of education members last night approved changes in the junior high athletic program which will result in the elimination of interschool football and basketball competition for seventh graders along with the termination of girls pompon drill team.

Room rates at the Allen County Hospital were increased effective today. 11 Strong winds cut a swath through Iola one block wide and 10 blocks long early this morning, twisting trees and damaging buildings from Rock to Douglas streets along State Street. Iola City Commissioners and Allen County Commissioners will discuss the future of ambulance service in Iola. 19 An auction was held yesterday in the soon to be demolished LaHarpe Elementary School. 22 Workers have started work remodeling the Allen County Courthouse.

23 The Iola Business and Professional Womens Club has selected Margaret Nielson as their Young Career Woman for 1977. Miss Nielson is a teacher for students with learning disabilities. 30 The community food pantry at the Community Action Center received $127 worth of canned food from the children in St. Johns Sunday School. This was the childrens project for Lent.

April 2 St. Timothys Episcopal Church, 206 South Walnut, has completed a three-year renovation program of the church and parish hall building. 4 Mrs. Cathy Conger, elementary counselor for the Iola schools, was named Counselor of the Year by the Kansas Personnel and Guidance Association at their annual convention in Topeka April 1. 5 Sealed bids are open for the house built by Iola High School students at Second and Douglas streets.

The school board has set a base bid of $39,500. 6 Jack Hastings was re-elected mayor of Iola in yesterdays election and Ralph Moser of Iola, Lyndell Mosley of Humboldt and Don Nelson of Elsmore, all incumbents, were elected to four-year terms on the Allen County Community Junior College Board of Trustees. Leroy Thomas Cannon, well-known attorney in Humboldt died yesterday at the age of 90 years. 9 Mrs. Florence Fursman is the new postmaster in Colony.

She has acted as officer in charge for 16 months, replacing Mrs. Ann Wilson. 12 Gates Rubber Company has completed a $275,000 expansion within its plant here which will reduce the local facilitys dependence on outside sources of material for hose production. 13 Iola City commissioners yesterday denied a request from Gas which would have resulted in extension of water service for commercial purposes to a development west of Allen County Country Club. 15 Marmaton Village, a housing complex for the elderly in Moran will hold open house Sunday.

The federal government has asked that the Allen County Hospital return $45,933 to the Medicare Administration with 30 days. Allen County Community Junior College receives notification that it has received a five-year extension on its accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. 18 Emerson Lynn publisher of the Iola Register, was elected president of the Kansas Press Association during its annual convention and trade show in Wichita last weekend. 20 Mrs. Denise Apt of Iola has been appointed to a national committee on education.

She is president of the Kansas Association of School Boards this year. 26 A city zoning commission and zoning regulation package, the result of a year of work by the city planning commission and a Wichita professional planner, was unveiled before residents of LaHarpe last night. 28 The last house to be built in the Meadowbrook addition in Iola will be finished sometime this summer. The home will be built for Mr. and Mrs.

Dale Creitz. 29 A service of rededication of St. Timothys Episcopal Church, 206 South Walnut, is scheduled for Sunday morning. May 2 A meeting in Elsmore tomorrow will kick off a series of five informational hearings this week and next on the proposed plan to set up zoning regulations in Aiien County. 3 Jerry Weis, a Neosho, assistant principal, has accepted the position as principal of Iola High School.

Weis is a Chanute native. 4 A zoning plan for Allen County which was presented to residents of Elsmore last night met an initial cool response. 6 Ed Miller, executive vice president of Miller and Son dress manufacturing here, has been elected secreatary of the Blue Cross of Kansas as a subscriber. A panel discussion on child abuse will be held at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center Monday. Police Chief John Maier, Dr.

David Hanson and Norman Shirer, high school psychology teacher, will be on the panel. 7 The ninth annual running of the Iola-to-Humboldt innertube raft race will be staged Sunday. May 9 Glade Leigh, Chuck Ballanger and Don McDaniels are announced the winner of the annual Neosho River Raft Race which was held Sunday. May 11 City commissioners said yesterday that the weekday congregate meals, which costs the city $8 a day in park funds, will be discontinued if a source of revenue to pay expenses does not materialize. 12 Ennor G.
