It should have Jill this spring, try trolling an extra-large lure around the mouths of the larger tributaries in those lakes in which rockfish have been stocked. Be sure to use -heavy tack-le-the state record rockfish is 44 pounds 4 ounces, and there are probably some bigger ones than that in Kentucky. The good fishing of March, April, and May is, I guess, providence's way of apologizing to the fisherman for February. So start sharpening up your hooks, tuning up your outboard motor, and making your plans. Winter won't last forever.

Since fishing depends largely on the weather, it's impossible to give an exact timetable of events, but roughly, this it what will happen. With the first warm spell, fishermen will start picking up a few small white bass, and then, usually sometime in March or early April, the spawning runs will be in full swing. About the same time, crappie fishermen will start exploring shoreline cover areas, looking for spawning concentrations of this fish. A little later, when the surface temperature is approaching 70 degrees, the bass will start moving into the shallows. This is the best time of the year for fishing surface lures, and bass fishing can be experienced at its exciting best.

Blue fishing is also at its best in the spring, either with live bait such as worms and crickets or with popping bugs fished with a fly rod. Generally, the main bluegill activity occurs shortly after the bass have' spawned. WE CAN SAVE YGU MONEY ON A NEW OR USED CAR OR TRUCK Sport Spots-4rena to honor Rupp By JOHN WILSON guest columnist February is generally a rather gloomy month for Kentucky's outdoorsmen. It's too cold for much fishing, and the hunting seasons have closed. But there is one bright spot this year, particularly if you're an avid quail or rabbit hunter. The season for these two species, as well as for furbearers, lias been extended through Feb. 28 this year.

As in the past, grouse hunting also will be permitted through the end of February. Duck and goose hunting ended Jan. 20, and the squirrel and archery deer seasons closed Dec. 31. Game biologists at the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources do not expect that there will be heavy hunting pressure during the extended quail and rabbit seasons, but for those who can't seem to get in enough hunting each year, the extra month will afford an opportunity for a trip or two.

Many experienced hunters prefer late-season hunting. They know that the opening weekend and the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are the most crowded and that after the first of the year they have the woods pretty much to themselves. But' while quail, rabbit and grouse hunters can enjoy February, there isn't much we can do to help the fishermen. Winter fishing can be productive if conditions are right and you are willing to brave sorae chilly weather, but most anglers Frosh pressure past Panthers for 52-32 win After using tight man-toman pressure to jump out to a 19-2 first period lead, the Franklin-Simpson freshmen cruised the rest of the way to post a 52-30 win over the Panthers at Russellville Monday night. Twenty-two saw action and nine scored as the snapped a three-game losing streak to build their record to 9-5 for coach Sonny Fentress.

Spencer Gamble netted 11 and Bret Brizendine 10 to set the scoring pace. Others notching points were Tommy Boyd 9, Carl Atkins 8, Jerry Flippin 6 and Bart Harris, Mike 'Samuels, Gary Allen and James Lunsford, all with two apiece. The Puddy-Cats will be in action against Butler County at 6:30 tonight at the F-S gym in a preliminary to a girls game at 8 p.m. continued from A-2 neighborhood of $214,000 per minute (or $3,500 per second) for a network spot. Those, at least, were the rates paid by advertisers for each minute of commercial air time on Super Bowl IX played at New Orleans on Jan.

19. And, according to figures released by Madison Avenue's man in the gray flannel suit, the National Broadcasting Company stretched the Super Bowl ex travaganza across five hours of billing time. Still, some wheel horses at NBC claim sponsors "got a bargain." The network says, "Our research people used a formula to figure that 70 million people watched the game." If that's true-as interpolated from the A.C. Nielsen survey of 1,100 homes-then virtually half of the United States' population between the ages of 7 and 70 actually watched the game.
